Hsuan-Pu Chen got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Entomology at National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taiwan. He will purchase his Ph.D. at Graduate School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University since October 2025. His research interests are the systematics and evolution of the mega-diverse parasitoid wasp family Ichneumonidae. His main research topic involves the taxonomy and morphology of the diverse nocturnal genus of Ichneumonidae, Netelia. Additionally, he is involved in several projects related to taxonomy of other parasitoid wasps (Ichneumonidae) as side-projects.
Hsuan-Pu Chen's fascination with the diverse morphology of the mega-diverse parasitoid wasp family, Ichneumonidae, has led him to explore more intriguing topics. His main research group, nocturnal Darwin wasp genus Netelia, having specialized structure of male genitalia that is widely used for species-level diagnosis, yet their function and evolution remain unknown. Understanding the functional morphology and morphological evolution of male genitalia within genus Netelia would provide valuable insights into the speciation mechanism and evolutionary history of this diverse group.
Since his second year as an undergraduate, Hsuan-Pu Chen joined the Insect Systematic Laboratory led by Prof. Shiuh-Feng Shiao, where he received training in traditional taxonomy, systematics, and geometric morphometrics. Additionally, Hsuan-Pu Chen conducted an independent study at the Institute of Oceanography, NTU, under the guidance of Prof. Wei-Jen Chen during his senior years. The study focused on the integrative taxonomy of goosefish, and it provided him with extensive training in molecular phylogeny and integrative taxonomy.
During Hsuan-Pu Chen's bachelor's and master's studies, he has already achieved several publications related to the taxonomy and biology of Ichneumonoidea and fishes. Most of his publications involved collaborations with foreign researchers, particularly Japanese researchers. He will delve deeper in systematics, comparative morphology, functional morphology, and trait evolution under the instruction of Prof. Kazunori Yoshizawa during his Ph. D. course.
Beyond his research, Hsuan-Pu Chen also deeply passionate about sharing knowledge with the public and contributing to the field of education. He has co-established a Facebook group called "姬繭風—臺灣的姬蜂總科 Ichneumonoidea of Taiwan" to share the beauty of Ichneumonoidea with the public and connect the professional researchers and amateur citizen scientists. As the sole young ichneumologist in the new generation in Taiwan, Hsuan-Pu is also driven to make a significant impact in the field of agricultural entomology through his taxonomic studies. He has established strong connections with the Taiwan Agriculture Research Institute (TARI), utilizing their specimen collection for his research and occasionally assisting with identification. He usually uses the specimens deposited in TARI for his taxonomic publications, which may further contribute to the field and solidifying his commitment to advancing agricultural entomology in Taiwan.
