If you own a vehicle or are planning to buy one in India, you may have heard the term HSRP number plate quite a lot lately. But what exactly is it, and why is it important? Let’s break it down in a simple and friendly way so you know exactly what an HSRP number plate is, why you need one, and how to get it.
What is an HSRP Number Plate?
HSRP stands for High-Security Registration Plate. It’s a type of vehicle number plate introduced by the Indian government to make vehicle identification more secure and standardized. A traditional number plate could be easily removed, changed, or duplicated, which made it difficult to track vehicles involved in thefts or crimes. The HSRP number plate helps solve that problem.
Unlike regular number plates, the hsrp number plate is made of aluminum and comes with a hot-stamped chromium-based hologram of Ashoka Chakra, a unique 10-digit permanent identification number (PIN), and laser-etched information. It’s fixed to your vehicle using a non-removable snap lock, making tampering nearly impossible.
Why is the HSRP Number Plate Mandatory?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made HSRP number plates mandatory for all vehicles—new or old. This rule is being enforced across many states in India. The main aim is to reduce vehicle-related crimes, make traffic law enforcement easier, and move toward digital vehicle tracking systems in the future.
The HSRP number plate also ensures uniformity in number plate design across the country, which helps law enforcement agencies identify vehicles more efficiently. For new vehicles, the plate is installed during registration. But for older vehicles, owners are required to replace their existing plates with an HSRP number plate within a set deadline.
What are the Benefits of an HSRP Number Plate?
Enhanced Security: The laser-etched PIN and hologram make it nearly impossible for criminals to duplicate the plate.
Easier Law Enforcement: Uniform plates help police and traffic authorities spot fake or tampered plates quickly.
Helps in Theft Recovery: If your vehicle is stolen, an HSRP number plate makes it easier for the police to track and recover it.
Standardized Format: Every vehicle, whether it’s a scooter or an SUV, gets a plate in a consistent, approved format.
What Happens If You Don’t Have an HSRP Number Plate?
If you're still using an old number plate, you could face penalties. Several states have started issuing fines for non-compliance. The exact fine amount varies from state to state but could go up to ₹5,000 in some cases. So, it’s not just about following the rules—it’s also about avoiding unnecessary costs.
How to Apply for an HSRP Number Plate?
Applying for an hsrp number plate is quite straightforward:
Visit the official HSRP website: Each state has a designated site or vendor approved by the government. For instance, bookmyhsrp.com is one such portal used in several states.
Enter vehicle details: Input your registration number, engine number, and chassis number.
Choose a slot: Select a date and time slot for installation at a fitment center or request doorstep service if available.
Make payment online: Charges depend on the type of vehicle (two-wheeler, car, etc.).
Get your plate installed: On your scheduled date, visit the selected center and have the plate fixed professionally.
Remember, only authorized dealers can issue a genuine HSRP number plate, so avoid getting one from unverified sources.
What About Color-Coded Stickers?
Along with the HSRP number plate, the government also mandates a color-coded sticker known as the third registration sticker. This sticker indicates the type of fuel your vehicle uses:
Blue: Petrol/CNG
Orange: Diesel
Green: Electric
This sticker is pasted on the inside of your windshield and is linked to your HSRP registration.
Final Thoughts
The HSRP number plate is a smart and necessary step toward modernizing India’s vehicle registration system. It helps improve road safety, reduces crime, and brings more discipline to the roads. If you haven’t yet upgraded your vehicle with an HSRP number plate, now is the time to do it.
