I have been a photographer for almost 50 years ever since I got my first SLR camera and saw my first black and white print appearing in the developing bath. I was drawn to it, by the ability of photography to record people, events, objects, placing, and things I see or experience and would like to remember. My father was an artist and when I was growing up, I lived in a house that was full of abstract paintings. In retrospect, I believe this may be why I am especially drawn to “abstract” photography, in which the shapes colors and lines and composition of the final image are more important than the actual subject matter. The goal is to make an image that I enjoy looking at rather than recording how something actually looks. I am not “selling” the object, but the image that it inspires. Just like a person might apply cosmetics or fix their hair to accentuate their “best” features, I process my images to accentuate the components of the image that lead me to capture the image in the first place.

Career Services, Director, liaison to the College of Medicine and Life Sciences
Shelly Drouillard was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and spent most of her adult life living in the Metro Detroit area before returning to her hometown in 2015. She has an Associate of Arts in Business from Lourdes University, a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Siena Heights University, and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University. Shelly currently serves as the Director of Career Services at the University of Toledo with a total of 12 years of experience in higher education. She also has over 25 years of professional experience in various consulting and management roles.
Artistically, Shelly has been expressing herself through photography since being gifted with her first Polaroid camera as a child. Capturing ordinary and extraordinary fleeting moments in nature has been a constant theme in her work. While sheltering in place during Covid she started experimenting with using oils to hand paint over her photographs and has since added that mixed media element to her artistic pursuits. She affectionately refers to these newer works as her “minis” as the hand-painted photos are mounted onto small wood blocks to display. Shelly also offers her nature photographs on split-wrapped canvases in various sizes and configurations to provide additional aesthetics and texture to her photo images.

College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Student
My name is Chinenye Ezema, I am a Nigerian student studying pharmacy here at UT. Growing up I've always enjoyed drawing, painting, and illustrating. I would often do this to occupy myself as a child, for special events like birthdays I would draw for my family and friends to show appreciation. Unfortunately my enthusiasm towards art slowly reduced due to educational priorities faced in university. I was thrilled to see that UT was hosting an art showcase, and I hope this opportunity can be a recurring event to look forward to.

Jolene Miller plays in many artistic media. This is her first mosaic since making a coaster with small ceramic tiles in a summer recreation program when she was 7 years old. The variety of glass used in this project - color, texture, finish, shapes - stretched her idea of what a mosaic could be.

I am a second year medical student at UT with a background in the arts. I began painting when I was about 10 years old and picked up the hobby again throughout medical school. Painting is an immense stress and anxiety relief for me. Being able to express myself through the abstract is an ability I am very thankful for. Especially conveyingmore important concepts such as the painting "Inside, Out" which is meant to depict the nuance, issues, and controversy within mental health and society.
