The first set of assignments are designed to both refresh your memory regarding technical aptitude, build new visual and verbal vocabularies for the semester, and prime your creativity for a mode of work focusing on techtonics: spatial design as informed by materials, connections, and construction.
Phase one: Precedent Studies.
We are going to develop a 24x36 landscape presentation board (digital presentation) that explores the methodology, quality, materiality and spatial significance of two diverging expressions of sculpture. You are going to pair two precedent studies - one sculpture, and one architectural wall section. The two different precedent studies do not need to share any similar qualities other than relevance to your personal design aesthetic. We will develop a process where we are observing and studying multiple precedents of both through the opening weeks, so be prepared to research multiple examples to pair together two really interesting studies - sculpture and architectural section...destined to be best friends forever ever.
Process:
On Friday the 23rd of August bring 3 sculptures and 3 sections to class in presentation format (i would suggest on your website). The presentation format should include:
- 2-3 images of the sculpture, all relevant information of work itself (artist, date, and image sources), and 2-3 sentences describing the qualities about the work and spatial significance.
- 3 different wall sections examples. On your decisions and selections: We are NOT looking merely for wall sections that communicate constructability. We ARE looking for wall sections that are spatial (specifically have spaces and depth in the wall section - not merely a separation of interior to exterior), are well published designs (you need to make sure you have access to good drawings), and are replicable in the software you have available (and at your current skill level). A great set of books to reference are Materials for Design 1 and 2 which should be available in our library - the internet is groovy, but books are beautiful y'all.
- Be prepared to share your work, literally. We are a studio, group, team. As a group, we are going to help create pairs and matches of designs that create something new, innovative, and engaging. Your sculpture and section may migrate to another desk, and that is a good thing.
On Friday the 30th of August we are going to be visiting your precedent sections in either VR or Realtime display. You will need to model your section in the 3d model of your choice, and move the file into Twinmotion for public consumption and review.
Project One Due: Wednesday September 18th.
From your precedent selections, you will be creating a wall section design that merges the qualities of your precedent studies into a design of your creation. The wall section should be spatial in its quality (not a 2d separator of interior and exterior), should have a basic understanding of materiality and construction, and will be communicated in three specific mediums:
- 2d drawing - printed - at a scale to be negotiated with your instructor. Probably 1/2".
- 3d model of your wall section at a scale to be negotiated with your instructor. Probably 1/4", maybe 1/8".
- Realtime representation of your section.
- Completed site model of Polk Bros Park and surrounding area. Scale 1:100. This is a group project.
The design of your wall section is intended to fold into your final design of the Chicago Fireboat House. You do not need to have resolved plans, elevations, or programming documents for the Fireboat House. As you resolve the full design, the wall section will change through the final. No worries.
This assignment will have a full review, and is worth 20% of your final grade.
You are charged this semester with the design of a Fireboat Firehouse (that is the technical name. yes. it is redundant.). The location is at the Polk Bros. Park in Chicago. The Fireboat house will be the location for the Christopher Wheatley, or a fireboat of similar specifications. We will be working with the following program:

Interim Review: October 23.
This is the Wednesday after Fall Break. Plan accordingly please!
Requirements:
- Physical Model. Probably a full model at 1/16" scale. However, detail models are acceptable if discussed with the faculty.
- 1/16" Floor plans - hard copy - include site plan on the entry level floor plan. Remember to include a travel distance analysis from primary areas for the crew to the boat.
- 1/8" Section (or 1/14") - hard copy - remember, this drawing is about detail, space, and techtonics.
- Interactive display through TwinMotion. You will be plugging a laptop into a monitor to display your TwinMotion file which should be focused on space, material, and context.
- By Friday October 25 - The Game Plan!! After this interim review, you have three and a half week to make modifications and prepare for your final review. On your website - assimilate your design changes, modifications, and a schedule for completion. Include: plans, section drawing, photographs of your physical model, and two+ images from your virtual model.
Final Review: December 2.
December 2 is the Monday after Thanksgiving Break. Your "on the wall" due date will be before Thanksgiving Break. Specifically, Tuesday November 26th at 5p. Plan accordingly!
- Floor Plans - 1/16" Scale - On presentation board. The entry level plan should also show your site context to the edge of water and north into Polk Bros Park.
- Section - 1/8" to 1/4" - On presentation board.
- Diagrams - 2-3 key design diagrams or details - On presentation board.
- Key perspectives/elevations/etc that establish your project character. Also known as the "money shot." - On presentation board.
- Virtual model ready for presentation in Twinmotion. Establish 4-5 key camera locations for navigation. create one 20-30 second (NO MORE THAN 20-30 SECONDS) animation.
- Physical model - 1/16" or 1/8" scale. This should include your site (to the edge of the water on at least two sides, possibly three, and to the edge of Polk Bros Park. You should clearly show paths, connections, edges. Your building model should contain the basics of the interior, but should primarily work to convey your overall building form. Your scale should be 1/16" - check with me if you need to modify the scale for a good reason.
- Digital Files - All final presentation files (plans, section, diagrams, perspective, and photographs of your physical model) appropriately titled and in the ARCH 315 Beach Finals Folder. No grade will be issued until this is completed.
- Web site - Updated with appropriate process and final files.
