Unit 0: Overview

In this unit we are going to review key algebra and pre-algebra math standards that students must master before taking a high school geometry class.

Summary of Key Lesson Topics

  • Review simplifying polynomial expressions

  • Review adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomial expressions

  • Review evaluating expressions

  • Review solving one step and two-step linear equations

  • Review evaluating absolute value

Pre-requisite Math Standards Introduced

  • Days 1 - 8: Standards A-SEE.A.2 and A.APR.A.1

    • A.APR.A.1: Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.

    • A.SSE.A.1: Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context. Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients. Interpret complicated expressions by viewing one or more of their parts as a single entity. For example, interpret P(1+r)n as the product of P and a factor not depending on P.


  • Solving Linear equations: A-REI-A1 and A-REI.B.3. (overlaps with 8.EE.C.7 )

    • A.REI.A.1: Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.

    • A.REI.B.3: Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
