PROJECT 1: AAC APP (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)
For my personalized AAC app, I chose six messages that represent important parts of my life, including needing a chai, seeing my German Shepherd, being an OT major, and sharing my almond allergy. I also included that I am from Reading, PA and a button to call Alicia for help because AAC can be used to communicate both personal information and important needs. This project helped me understand how AAC and speech-generating devices can give people with complex communication needs a way to express themselves, make choices, and communicate with others.
PROJECT 2: Talking Compass (Electronic Travel Aids)
For this second project, I created a talking compass app using the Orientation Sensor Function to determine the directional whereabouts/ the direction the the phone is facing. I used the angle ranges such as 0–44° for North, 45–89° for Northeast, 90–134° for East, 135–179° for Southeast, 180–224° for South, 225–269° for Southwest, 270–314° for West, and 315–330° for Northwest. With the app, I used the text-to-speech function to say the direction aloud when the individual clicks the blue button. This project helped me gain a better understanding on how technology can be used to provide auditory directions for individuals with visual impairments.
