My name is Hayden, and I'm a 5th-year PhD student in the Mathematics Department at Virginia Tech. My advisor is Dr. Mark Embree. I have also worked with Dr. Matthias Chung, now at Emory University. Previously, I studied at BYU under Dr. Jared Whitehead, where we collaborated with Dr. Ron Harris, Dr. Nathan Glatt-Holtz, and Dr. Justin Krometis on the TsunamiBayes project.
My research focuses on applied and computational mathematics. More specifically, I develop and apply techniques from numerical linear algebra, optimization, and Bayesian statistics. Applications of my work include geoscience (earthquakes and tsunamis) and life science (dairy cattle diet optimization). As a PhD student, I have been working on developing computational methods for inverse eigenvalue problems which arise from partial differential equations. In particular, I am interested in techniques to infer the shape of a drum from its vibrational frequencies (eigenvalues).
This semester, I am teaching Linear Algebra (Math 2114). In Spring 2024, I was a CMDA Capstone coach. I have previous teaching experience in calculus, linear algebra, data science, and numerical methods.
My hobbies include: playing music (cello & piano), running, looking at Jupiter and Saturn through my somewhat-decent telescope, and hanging out with my two nieces.
