"There are different kinds of freedom, and the kind that is most precious you will not hear about much...in the great outside world of wanting and achieving...The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day."Â
- David Foster Wallace
Dear student,
Assessments are an essential component of any functional classroom. While most instructors (and perhaps students) see assessments as its deliverable form (e.g. tests, quizzes, projects, etc.), I encourage my students to view them as chances for feedback. That's the key - feedback. Ask yourself, "based on the written and numerical feedback I received, how can I improve as a student and thinker?"
That said, our class has many opportunities for student feedback, bulleted below:
Bi-weekly quizzes
Individual Projects
Group/Team Projects
In-Class Checks for Understanding
Summative Midterm and Semester Final
Listed below are example bi-weekly quiz, Midterm, and Semester Final questions labeled by year. Please use these as chances to practice and prepare for the low- and high-stakes assessments.
Warmly,
Professor Dinh
