How can hygiene promotion support cholera response and control efforts?

Following the meeting of the WASH Sub Group of the Global Task Force for Cholera Control (GTFCC) in March is year, we explore the vital role of hygiene promotion and community engagement in responding to, preparing for and even preventing cholera outbreaks.

Overview of the work of the GTFCC –Justine Haag: Water and Sanitation Engineer with International Cooperation background, about 10 years field experience (Middle East, Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa) in both development and humanitarian settings and following closely the discussions on how to bridge the gap between both! Joined the Secretariat of the Global Task Force for Cholera Control in 2021 as its WASH FP and part of the cholera team at WHO HQ.
How is hygiene behaviour affected by a cholera outbreak? – Sian White: A Researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. For the last 7 years her work has predominantly focused on hygiene behaviour during crises and outbreaks.
Cholera prevention through behaviour change: RANAS – A Case Study from the Ghana Red Cross - Silvie Palacios: Behaviour change expert with a PhD in environmental psychology and more than 16 years of experience in behaviour change, the RANAS approach, international cooperation, project management, evaluation, participation, environmental education, teaching, topics and sustainable development.
How child faeces management and behaviour change interventions contributed to decrease Cholera outbreaks: Bangladesh – Dr. Nurullah Awal - The health adviser at WaterAid Bangladesh and has been coordinating WASH and health interventions and discussions, mainly with Ministry of Health, other key partners and NGOs. He is a member at the national technical committee on WASH at the Directorate of Health, and is also the chair of WASH working group at the GTFCC.
