Mythical Creatures
All over the world, since the beginning of time, people have created stories about fantastical beasts that they believed existed. They would find bones of an ancient creature and imagine what it looked like, or they'd catch just a glimpse of something they'd never seen before.
The stories our ancestors created would tell about the great powers or the magical places that they lived and the amazing things they did. Many of these stories were either Creation Myths - stories that explained how things came to be, or Etiological Myths - stories that explain why things are the way that they are.
CREATION MYTH EXAMPLE
On the first day, God created light...
This story of Genesis from the Jewish and Christian traditions is an example of a creation myth.
ETIOLOGICAL MYTH EXAMPLE
And Demeter cried for her daughter Persephone...
The story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades helped explain for the ancient Greeks why Winter happened, and why it lasted so long.
Using one of the images below, you will create your own myth.
If you recognize the mythological creature - choose a different image.
You can only choose an image if you are NOT familiar with the creature in the image.
Each picture has a list of 4 words next to it. These 4 words are things that can be seen in the picture.
You must use at least 3 of these words in your story.
