The Hood Park Hockey League was born like so many other great ideas, as a conversation between a couple of drunk guys in a bar. Josh Robert, the legendary goalie, said "Man, I wish someone would just start up a roller hockey league around here" and Mike Grages took the idea and ran with it. The first league ran from July through September of 2007 and was comprised of four teams. Over the years, more players joined and the league has grown to six teams and occasionally two nights. Now in it's 14th year, the Hood Park Hockey League continues to grow.
The Cup was designed and built by Chris Riley and a group of his friends while they were hanging out, playing with woodworking tools, and drinking. The Cup was created at the request of the commissioner and cost $130.
Over the years, the Cup has been known by many names. It was originally dubbed The Teemu Cup, named for Ryan "Teemu" Foye after he broke his ankle in the first round of the playoffs in the League's inagural season. Years after Foye's retirement, the name was changed to the Hood Cup. In 2019, the Cup was officially renamed the Blizzy Memorial Cup in honor of Ryan "Blizzy" Perry.
The league has had three commissioners over the years. Founding Commissioner Mike Grages has run the league since inception, with the exception of the 2012 and 2019 seasons. In 2012, Steve Dovich temporarily took over the role of acting Commissioner for the year while Grages was away. In 2018, James DiSalvo became Co-commisioner with Grages, and ran the league entirely in 2019. Now, Grages and DiSalvo work together to keep the league going.
