Summary: In a time where gods and myths existed in harmony (and sometimes in strife), there lived the mortals who challenged them. And within the populace of mortals, there lived men and women who seemed to have been sculpted by the hands of the gods themselves. Amongst them were the Bridgertons, with their pearlescent skin that seemed to glow in the sun and their dark hair in nearly every shade of brown.

Summary: She made a little humming noise. “I am afraid, Sir Knight, that this is one danger you cannot wave your sword at. There is no escaping my marriage.”
“Oh. That. Marriage is no danger.”
She gave him a look of such sharpness that he felt himself wither. “You are a man. You do not have the first idea of the dangers marriage entails for women.” Her chin trembled though she held it aloft. “And you are a Knight Protector — you are not permitted to marry until after I am wed.”
He opened his mouth to retort — but closed it quickly. She was, he supposed, right. In fact he could not imagine someone less suited to offer counsel on the subject than himself.
“What is it that you fear?” he asked.
She took a deep breath. “Cruelty. Neglect. Loneliness. A life spent in solitude and uselessness, my mind slowly disintegrating through lack of exertion. There is so much world out here, Colin, and I shall only ever see one tiny patch of it. I fear dying after a life only half-lived. I have dreams and ambitions and they shall never, ever be realised. So while I am able, I mean to live.”

Summary: “Mr Bridgerton? Colin?”
He almost did not recognise her. She looked very different — pretty red curls bobbed fashionably; cheeks and lips stained with a little rouge; a day dress in a lovely mauve colour that made her eyes seem bluer, somehow — but it was her scent that threw him off. Now that he thought about it, he could not quite recall what Penelope Featherington actually smelled like (he had not seen her in years, after all). She was so often at Bridgerton House that all he could summon was the same lilac smell that his mother and his siblings bore, but of course there must be other notes he was forgetting.
Still, he was fairly certain she had never smelled like this: vetiver and geranium, sharp and green and floral.
Not a bad smell by any means — just not Penelope’s. Even though he could not recall her scent, he knew certainly this was not it. She must be wearing perfume. It befuddled him so much that he realised he had been staring at her silently for a lot longer than was polite, especially for an old family friend he had not seen in ages.
