DM42

The DM42 is made by SwissMicros and is a simulation of the HP-42S with enhancements. Its software is based on Free42, a simulation of the HP-42S written by Thomas Okken. The enhancements over the HP-42S (including an unlimited stack size) are explained at the Free42 website. Based on a decimal floating-point math library and IEEE 754-2008 quadruple precision decimal floating-point, encoding numbers in 16 bytes and giving 34 decimal places of precision with exponents ranging from -6143 to +6144. This hardware platform is also being used to create several new calculators such as the WP43 and C47 projects shown near the end of this page. A RPL calculator project named DB48X is also under development for this platform (see the Additional Links page for more information).

41CL

The Systemyde 41CL takes advantage of modern technology to significantly add to the capabilities of the Hewlett-Packard 41C system. The 41CL circuit board replaces the original CPU board in the calculator and provides all the features of an HP-41CX except for the Time Module. CX Time functions (the software) are included, but a Time module plugged into a Port, or our new Time Module Clone, is required for full timer functionality.

WP 34S Photo from Wikipedia

WP 34S (shown) / WP 31S

The WP 34S (shown) project created custom firmware that can be loaded into a HP 20b or HP 30b financial calculator (both discontinued models) to turn it into a full-featured scientific RPN programmable calculator. Key stickers and a faceplate overlay label need to be applied to create the redefined keyboard.

The WP 31S is a stripped-down version of the WP 34S with no programming capability.

There is also a version of WP 34S firmware available to load into the DM42 calculator (which is a currently produced model). It does not require an overlay or key stickers.

The WP 34S/WP 31S firmware (for the HP 20/30b) and documentation is available at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/wp34s/

The WP 34S firmware port for the DM42 and documentation (see README) is available at: https://gitlab.com/njdowrick/wp34s-for-dm42

An emulation of the WP 34S is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, IOS and AndroidAn emulation of the WP 31S is available on Windows, Mac, Linux and IOS.

WP43

The WP43 project created custom firmware that can be loaded into a SwissMicros DM42 calculator to turn it into a more full-featured scientific programmable RPN calculator (with 2 shift keys). SwissMicros made a pilot production run of WP43 units with the needed key labels and face plate but has not made any more of them since then. Users can still create a WP43 calculator by applying custom key stickers and a custom face plate label to a DM42 and then re-flashing it with WP43 firmware.  It is also available as an emulation under Windows.

The WP43 firmware, emulator software and documentation is available at the WP43 Project Page.

C47

The C47 project (previously named C43) is a fork of the WP43 software that uses the original HP-42S/WP42 key labels (and its single shift key) so that key stickers are not required. It retains most of the functionality for the WP43 but has a different user interface. It does require a custom faceplate label to be applied to a DM42 and then re-flashing it with C47 firmware firmware. It is also available as an emulation under Windows.

The C47 firmware and documentation is available at the C47 Project Page.

Notes about the 'Voyager' series calculators (HP-11C, HP-12C, HP-15C, HP-16C & HP-10C):

The original design of the Voyager series was a “normal” vertical format like every calculator HP had made previously. Some of the design goals were that it had to fit easily into a shirt pocket and it had to withstand a 1 meter drop on all four corners (like all other HP calculators). Placing the LCD at the top of a vertical format calculator made it difficult to protect the LCD at this time without making the entire calculator bigger so they made in in a horizontal format to have more protection around the display. As this design problem was solved when the Pioneer family was introduced, HP never designed another new landscape model again.

The original anticipated product lifespan of the HP-12C and other Voyager models was about 2-3 years. HP expected to replace them with the Saturn-based Pioneer series calculator shortly after that. Despite this, the HP-12C has been in continuous production since 1981. Although the more recent revisions of the HP-12C use a newer processor that emulates the original "Nut" processor, they all have an identical feature set and are all running the same 43+ year old firmware codebase.
