Anyway. I've just bought an HPE Procurve 2530 (J9776a) for a very low price, and I would like to know how to upgrade firmware ? HPE seems to have replaced eveything with Aruba, and I'm not finding correct switch firmware for procurve ones ?

Got this unit recently as second hand, want to update the firmware on it. Currently at YA.16.05.0008, ROM YA.15.20.

Tried to use the GUI web and update it with the YB_16_10_0016.swi file found on the HPE website.

Can you ping the tftp from the switch? is the file with the same name located in its TFTP directory? Is there a firewall on the PC from where you are trying to get the firmware - if the firewall is on please try without it.

and it uses only YA firmware. YB versions are only for Fast Ethernet switches (10/100 for the client ports). You will get error messages if you try to upload an YB version to a Gigabit switch because they only accept YA.

I have three of the HP / Aruba 2530 switches and I finally got them updated similar to your situation. I highly recommend doing the incremental firmware upgrades. If you read their documentation, it specifically outlines this. Some firmware depends on previous releases. However, you do not have to upgrade to every single file. You can most likely skip several versions.

Even lateral moves are easy with HP. I recently upgraded an 11 year old HP-2510 switch (with original firmware from that time) to an 2930F model with latest firmware as of last week. The 11 year old config file applied just fine not only to a much newer firmware version but also a different model switch only needing one small syntax change in the NTP setup.

Hello,

I would like to perform a firmware update of the svitch in question.

Since i have never performed a firmware update on hp switches, what should i do?

my current version is YA.15.12.0015, ROM YA.15.12

To upgrade, can I directly upgrade to YA.16.04.0016 or do I need to upgrade from intermediate versions?

Can I use the switch gui or do I need to upgrade to command line?

Thank you so much

Hello,

the update procedure was successful.

I did not load the new firmware via cli, but via gui, then I performed the procedure based on what he suggested.

Thanks for the help, the new interface is really cool

I am doing my thesis and using Ansible to make a platform for an easier way to push confs to a group of switches. I am trying to upgrade/downgrade (basically just trying to get the playbook/task working) my 2530 test switch. I am using aruba-switch-ansible modules. Currently the playbook gives me an error at "Upgrade Firmware via API" saying that switch_session is undefined at /aruba-switch-ansible/aruba_task_lists/aos_switch/firmware_upgrade.yml starting from line 112. It's not mentioned that I should assigne the variable myself and that variable is not assigned anywhere known to my knowledge unless it should be automatically assigned by Ansible. I have no clue what the information inside the variable should be so I cannot assign it myself either.

I got the firmware_upgrade_api_v3 working as in it runs fine until Upgrade Firmware via API" and "Check if Upload Complete" parts. It makes and mentions the HTTP server and it's PID but nothing is getting uploaded to switch. I'm not sure where the problem lies. I've tried to look example from arubaoss_firmware_example.yml but nothing has helped.

Great to hear you've found a solution! In response to the benefits of using the SSH CLI and the REST API versions, with REST API you'll get validation that the upload is complete and successful with the REST API response code you get after executing the code. In addition since this this solution has been posted we've created a AOS-Switch module that should allow you to use the REST API to upload a file without using the URI module, check out arubaoss_file_transfer module:

I have a HP 2530-24G (H9776A) switch.

With the previous firmware I did have a manager user with an empty password.

After upgrading to the last firmware YA.16.03.0004 (the one with the new GUI) I cannot login with "manager".

I do recall reading in one of the HP firmware releases that the option of having a manager/operator login with no password was removed - at least on the console port. You could have nothing or un/pw, but not in-between.

The firmware has been embedded with trust anchor for verifying the firmware repository server certificate. Updates are made to verify the Subject Alternative Name (SAN) from the server certificate and to limit the newly added trust anchor for only https-based firmware downloads.
