The Free To Play Riichi City Guide

One of the appeals of mahjong apps, in my opinion, is that they can be free to play. You can enjoy all the mahjong action without spending a dime!

However, if you want a custom experience, with your favorite characters and everything, you'll have to head to the Gacha and try your luck. Riichi City is generous with your time, and gives you many ways to earn free gacha spins, called Lucky Tokens (LT) in game! Let me show you the bounty of fruit that's hanging right there at eye level.

In Riichi City, you can earn up to 3 LT a week.  Save them to try for your favorite character when they are on rate up! 


Daily Check In: Log in daily for 6 days out of the week. This method does not require you to play any mahjong at all!!!

Weekly Missions: Play 7 Ranked Matches (or 5 Ranked Matches if you have the Monthly Mascot), check your Whale status in the bonus section, and redeem the Lucky Token in the Shop with Gift Fragments.

Gift Fragment Recycling: Shop> Exchange> Others. 50 Gift Fragments required, which you will usually be able to clear between Daily Check in, Daily Mission, and Weekly Mission gifts. Note that you have to get this Lucky Token as part of your Weekly Missions! 

Other Free LT Available

While these LT will always be available, there are a few other ways to get free LT that are available a little less frequently, or are a one time redemption.

Top Stamp Redemption: This is available under Shop > Exchange > Stamp Store. An explanation of how to get Top Stamps is here, but suffice to say the more 1st place finishes in ranked you get, the more free spins you can get, so play hard and AIM FOR FIRST PLACE!!!. There are 4 LT available here a month, if you can afford them.

Events: I can't think of a single event Riichi City has done that didn't give out at least 1 LT. Some events take a little more effort to get the LT than others. You'll see 1-2 events a month, there's always something cool to do in Riichi City!

Befrend 30 People: Try inviting your IRL or online friends in! Friend players that hit you with that double yakuman! Friend players that emote at funny moments! If you get to 30, you will get 1 free LT.

Ranked Match Yakuman: How nice is this! Is anyone else giving you a bonus like this? The first time you hit a specific Yakuman in Ranked, you will get a free Lucky Token! thats A WHOPPING 16LT AVAILABLE! It might take a long time before you collect them all however...

Refer A Friend: Well, there's no Ferrari at the top of this pyramid, just a flowery avatar frame. If you invite 5 Friends using your unique code found under Events > Refer A Friend, and they rank up to at least D1 Dan, you'll get a free spin. The Item Fragment and Outfit Coupon you get here is good for awakening your characters too! Use my code if you don't got buddies to add, you can be my buddy. I still need to get that avatar frame! 

I don't think this is very controversial to say, but in terms of English mahjong apps, Riichi City gives you more for free than any other app, by a huge margin! 

Remember also that every Gacha spin gives you 1 Gacha Stamp, which you can use to directly redeem your favorite Characters and Decorations! You may have to invest a little bit of time, but you can customize your game just fine, without having to spend any money! 

For a Little Bit Extra, the Monthly Mascot

I'm pretty much playing mahjong non stop. To kick back a little bit to the devs who let me save up all these free spins, I buy the Monthly Mascot. I see Monthly Mascot as sort of a "subscription" to the app. 

Here's what you get with it:

1. You'll get 2500 Vouchers; 400 immediately, and then 70 a day.  If you miss a check in, you miss the vouchers, so that's why the next benefit helps! 

2. One day a week, you can miss logging in. You'll be able to make it up on the next check in. That's your progress toward the LT for logging in as well.

3. Instead of having to play 7 Ranked Matches for the Weekly Missions, you only have to play 5.

4. Title and Frame. They're kinda of nice, but of course not very unique. Either may pair with whatever customization you want, so it's definitely something!

5. Exclusive  Event Rewards:  In some Riichi City events, Monthly Mascot holders will receive an extra benefit, or be able to make an increased contribution to a donation themed event.  If you're trying to climb the leaderboard for these special events, it might be difficult without a Monthly Mascot.
