The finals week is often hectic because one is bombarded with several assignments and exams to prepare for and sit for simultaneously. For most university students, this is a stressful period because there are high expectations from their professors. However, neglecting one’s mental well-being could lead to poor academic performance during this period. It is important not only to work hard but also to take care of oneself in the process.
Managing Stress Effectively
Another difficulty that one might encounter during their final examinations is the issue of coping with stress. As highlighted by the American Psychological Association, stress could impair one's cognitive abilities such as memory, focus, and decision-making. These are crucial factors in any examination setting.
The Importance of Sleep
Sleep is also an important element that people often neglect when it comes to their studies. While staying up all night and studying might be considered productive, scientific evidence by the National Sleep Foundation reveals that obtaining between 7 and 9 hours of rest helps cognitive functions, increases attentiveness, and promotes memory consolidation.
Maintaining Balance
Balancing oneself while preparing for exams is equally important as studying itself. Shortbreaks, proper diet, and hydration will not only energize but also help avoid exhaustion. Moreover, according to the CDC, regular exercise, including even walking, helps in managing stress. These little things can go a long way towards ensuring you have a productive week ahead of you.
Seeking Support When Needed
It is also essential that you realize when you require help. Many colleges, such as Howard University, offer counseling facilities for their students. Speaking to your friends, professors, and counselors may also help you cope with your anxiety and stress.
Finishing exams may be a brief period of time, yet your mental health is permanent. Putting your health first does not distract you from achieving; rather, it helps you achieve. Caring for your mental and physical health enables you to perform optimally.
