The Reality of Constant Connection
Today’s generation finds it quite hard not to connect with people at any point in their lives. In a modernized, technology-based environment, people are glued to the mobile screens for most of their day. While the advantages of staying connected are undeniable, spending so much time looking at the phone screen has adverse impacts on mental health. Digital detox helps individuals to take regular breaks from their gadgets.
The Impact on Students
It seems impossible for students to spend their time without the help of their mobiles as they depend on it to talk to other people or complete assignments. Spending a lot of time on smartphones can cause various health issues, including mental stress and depression. The habit of constantly scrolling through the social network pages might be an alarming sign for students.
Starting Small with a Digital Detox
Fortunately, a digital detox does not necessarily mean taking dramatic measures. It does not require removing all apps from your device or disconnecting entirely from the internet. Rather, you should begin by making subtle modifications to your behavior. Examples of these modifications include reducing notifications for non-essential applications or setting aside some time every day when you will avoid checking these applications. Simple measures such as refraining from using your phone during mealtimes and before bed are effective as well.
Being Mindful of Social Media Use
One should also be wary of one’s consumption on social media. It is common for social media platforms to give us glimpses of other people’s lives that seem perfect, and in doing so, this can cause us to compare ourselves with others, making us feel inadequate. Maintaining our peace involves curating our online spaces by unfollowing pages that bring negativity and following posts that inspire us and lift our spirits. This way, we will not be swayed by things that we see online.
The Benefits of Unplugging
Detaching from technology does not mean that we are missing out; in fact, taking a break allows us to have a fresh perspective and get a clearer sense of things.
Unplugging does not mean that you are doing anything wrong; rather, it means becoming more aware of yourself and your surroundings. As you give yourself some downtime away from the screen, you become capable of making sense of things around you and interacting with people in the real world.
