January did not just mark the start of the 2026 Spring semester, it marked the beginning of a new era of learning for Howard University students. Howard University is now offering an Artificial Intelligence (AI) course, designed to equip students with the proper tools needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. With the class at capacity, students are engaging with a new curriculum built to make them thrive.

AI is transforming fields from healthcare and education to communications and entertainment. Furthermore, employers are increasingly seeking graduates who understand how to navigate these growing technologies. Howard’s new AI course reflects the growing need for higher education institutions to prepare students for the realities of our ever-changing world. For students, this course represents more than learning a new skill; it offers a foundation to be able to understand how AI impacts society, ethics, culture and equity.
The course introduces students to both the technical foundations and real-world applications of AI. Key areas of focus are:
Machine Learning Fundamentals - how AI systems learn from data
Ethics & Bias in AI - addressing fairness and social responsibility
Real-world Applications - exploring how AI is used in marketing, business, healthcare and media
Hands-on Tools & Platforms - giving students experience with using AI
By combining theory with application, this course helps students see AI from different perspectives and learn how to apply those perspectives to real-word scenarios. Junior, Anthony Tucker, even described the class as “deeply insightful and thought-provoking,” demonstrating how impactful this course is.
Diverse perspectives are vital to AI development as they ensure underrepresented communities are part of the conversation to ensure technology is accessible and palatable to everyone. For decades, Howard University has been a leader in preparing Black students for careers in STEM and technology. Introducing this course continues that legacy by aiding in closing the representation gap in various fields.
As technology evolves one this is true: Howard University students will be prepared.
