Following the major snow storm and an extra 6 weeks of winter ahead of us (as predicted by Punxsutawney Phil), it can be easy to catch a traditional case of the winter blues. Many Howard students are hitting a lul in the semester with assignments piling up, big exams around the corner, and the sun setting earlier are no help at all. With 3 weeks until spring forward, we are left to ask ourselves how to combat this darkness.
Light Therapy Boxes (Phototherapy) is the primary evidence based treatment to combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This cutting edge technology mimics natural sunlight to regulate circadian rhythm and mood. These light boxes emit 10,000 lux white light and when users sit near the device in the morning for 20-30 minutes it works to regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin. There are also alternatives such as Dawn Stimulators which are alarm clocks that mimic sunrise and gradually lighten a room.
While light therapy in the mornings can increase alertness and boost mood, exposure to bright light (even from screens like phones and tablets) can make it difficult to fall asleep unless blue emission is blocked. Limiting screen time at least an hour before bed is ideal for maintaining healthy circadian rhythms. Maintaining the same sleeping patterns that an individual had in the spring or summer help combat the effects of seasonal affective disorder.
Overall, if you are struggling with the extra hours of darkness this season, you do not have to struggle alone. Educate yourself on holistic treatment to improve your own health. Speak with a doctor or mental health professional. As Howard students we all have access to 8 free sessions with the University Counseling Services Office located in the basement of the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle.
