Now that it is March, many Howard University students start planning for internships, travel or time at home. However, enrolling in summer classes is another option that can help students stay on track academically while making productive use of the break.
Howard University offers summer courses designed to help students continue their academic progress outside of the traditional fall and spring semesters. Summer classes allow students to complete required credits, catch up on courses, or get ahead in their degree program. For some students, summer enrollment can also make it easier to manage a lighter course load during the regular academic year.
Summer Sessions
Howard’s summer term is typically divided into two main sessions: Summer Session I and Summer Session II. Each session runs for several weeks and offers a variety of courses depending on the department. Because the sessions are shorter than a traditional semester, courses are more accelerated and may meet more frequently.
Despite the faster pace, students still earn the same number of academic credits as they would during the fall or spring semester. The condensed schedule simply allows students to complete coursework in a shorter amount of time. Students interested in enrolling should review the course listings and academic calendar to confirm available classes, registration deadlines and session dates.
Why Take Summer Classes?
Stay on track for graduation
Summer courses provide an opportunity to earn additional credits that may help students graduate earlier or remain on schedule if they need to make up credits.
Focus on fewer classes
Unlike the fall and spring semesters, summer schedules are typically lighter. Taking one or two courses allows students to focus more closely on specific subjects without juggling a full course load.
Improve scheduling flexibility
Completing prerequisite or required courses during the summer can open up space in future semesters for internships, study abroad programs or electives.
Maintain academic momentum
Continuing coursework during the summer helps students stay engaged with their studies and maintain strong academic habits throughout the year.
Things to Consider
Students planning to take summer courses should speak with their academic advisors to determine which classes best fit their degree plan. Planning ahead is important, as some courses fill quickly and not all classes are offered every summer.
Students should also review financial aid policies and housing options if they plan to remain on campus during the summer term.
Planning Ahead
Summer registration offers Howard students an opportunity to make steady progress toward their academic goals while taking advantage of a more flexible schedule. Whether students are trying to get ahead, catch up or simply stay academically engaged, summer classes can be a valuable option during the break.
For Bison looking to maximize their time between semesters, summer courses may be the perfect way to keep moving forward. Don't miss your chance to sign up now!
