The rise of AI usage consistently grows even amongst big companies. With everyone using AI, it’s hard to know which brands are real and authentic versus which ones are using AI. Throughout the Super Bowl, many of the commercials lacked creativity, were made using AI, or promoted the use of AI products. Many people feel that using AI feels lazy as well as money-hungry. Records show that 15 out of 66 of the Super Bowl commercials featured some sort of artificial intelligence. Whether it was promoting it or using it to promote a product instead of hiring a creative. This isn’t something that we as a society should normalize. If we continue to use AI, not only will it have detrimental impacts on climate change and the world we live in, but it also run qualified people out of jobs.
Knowing what’s real and what’s not can help students from getting scammed. You can also decipher which companies you would want to give your money to based on whether they may be abusing artificial intelligence. While people have found AI to be useful or futuristic, it’s important to be vigilant and understand what’s human versus AI.
A commercial that brought up many concerns was the Ring camera commercial called Search Party From Ring. The public felt that this commercial was scary, considering the technology used. The commercial promoted the use of AI in order to find your lost dog. The camera uses AI to scan the neighborhood for your dog. People find this creepy because this means AI can be tracking your neighborhood, and that feels invasive of privacy. On top of all the ways technology already tracks us, we do not need yet another one.
Another commercial that was uncomfortable to look at was Vodka's Shake Your Bots Off commercial at the Super Bowl. This commercial was very clearly made by AI. Normalizing the bots and humanizing them felt out of touch. Many people nowadays consistently try to humanize AI or act like it's their friend. Having the robot drink the Vodka also felt like they were trying to have us act like the artificial intelligence was a real person. We need to rely on ourselves and not robots. Humans cannot be imitated by technology.
What can you do? Action Items and facts about AI consumption:
Stop relying on AI
