Springtime in D.C. is a wonderful time; the cherry blossoms are blooming, the streets are lively, and the sun is finally out! If you need some classic D.C. spring passtime, then it is time for a visit to the Wharf. A notably charming DC area, the Wharf is a waterfront neighborhood that stretches a mile long, with a plethora of food and activities perfect for spring. All those activities can be overwhelming, so below is a guide to different ways to spend time at the Wharf.
Also, a great guide to the Wharf is the official district website, which offers a clear overview of the stores, restaurants, and events, along with a map. Still use this article, as it highlights specific ways to pass the time!
Chihuahuas racing at the Running of the Chihuahuas
The Wharf is never not busy, especially during these warmer months. Here are some upcoming spring events you won't want to miss. On May 2nd, there is the Running of the Chihuahuas, an iconic event with a Pacifco beer garden and the opportunity to adopt a furry friend. It is literally a race of 150 Chihuahuas on a 60-foot racetrack, and all proceeds go to Rural Dog Rescues, a non-profit that aims to save dogs from high-kill shelters.
Want some music? That’s fine, then you should head to the waterfront on April 18th to the District Sounds Festival. From 3-9 PM, take the opportunity to listen to international artists or local DC students play incredible music that celebrates community and culture. People of all ages are welcome, and ticket prices range from $6 to $12.

With all that activity, hunger is bound to arrive. Here are some amazing restaurants highlighted on the Wharf, either to grab a quick bite or sit down for an experience. First, as a true waterfront area, there needs to be a complementary seafood restaurant. Hank’s Oyster Bar is known for “urban beach food”. Drawing on both local seafood and West Coast oysters, this restaurant offers beach-food classics from an extensive menu.
Another option would be Bar Taco, a rustic, stylish restaurant that combines upscale street food with the waterfront's coastal vibe. With a completely relaxing ambiance, this restaurant offers a wide range of options, including choices for those with dietary restrictions. Some of their most popular items included pork belly, the crispy rice bowl, and churros.
There are endless options to enjoy a day at the Wharf, so select with care and have a great time this spring.
