If you wanted to locally celebrate the Lunar New Year in 2026, all you had to do was go to Chinatown in Washington, D.C. and join the crowd.
On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the streets of Chinatown were filled with music, vibrant colors, and buzzing excitement for the annual Lunar New Year Parade. The event began at 2 p.m., ended at 4 p.m., and was free for attendees. The procession, which began on 6th and I street, brought together families, performers, marching bands, and local organizations to ring in and celebrate the Year of the Horse. Even though the weather was a little rainy, that did not stop people from showing up and lining the streets.
One of the best ways to celebrate was by watching the lion dances. Lion dancers of every age moved through the streets with drums and cymbals echoed between the buildings. The lion dances were especially exciting because they are believed to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity for the new year.
2026 specifically was the Year of the Fire Horse, which is even more rare. The Year of the Fire Horse occurs every 60 years. In the Chinese zodiac, the Fire Horse represents transformative energy, passion, and boldness. Since this combination only happens once every 60 years, many people felt like 2026 was a powerful year to start fresh and take bold steps forward.
Mayor Muriel Bowser was in attendance, joining the celebration and showing support for the city's Asian American community. Denise Yan, the second runner-up in the 2023 Pacific Miss Asian American Pageant, even rode through the parade waving to crowds in her crown. She noted the children's excitement at her appearance.
The parade ended with a loud and exciting firecracker finale on 6th and H street. It was the perfect way to close out the celebration with a bold bang, and officially welcome in the Year of the Fire Horse.
Overall, the 2026 Lunar New Year Parade showed how D.C. came together to honor culture, history, and community. This time next year, be sure to attend the Lunar New Year parade and see the celebration come to life for yourself.
