It’s been a long, cold winter, days barely breaking 40 degrees, filled with ice, wind, rain, and endless bus delays. The kind of season that makes seasonal depression feel less like a concept and more like a daily reality. But then, almost out of nowhere, the weather app hits 80. Blankets cover the yard, music drifts through the air, and everyone is outside like they’ve been set free. And in that moment, you remember exactly why you chose HBCU in the first place.
The shift is instant. The same campus that felt quiet and rushed suddenly feels alive again. People are no longer just passing by, they are staying, laughing, and connecting. The yard turns into a scene, friends catching up after months of staying inside, new faces being introduced, and groups forming like it is the first week of school all over again. It is not planned, it just happens.
Spring at Howard is more than just warmer weather, it is a whole aesthetic. Outfits get lighter, brighter, and more intentional. It is soft life meets main character energy. People step out not just to be seen, but to express themselves. Whether it is a chill sweatsuit or a full look, there is a quiet confidence in how everyone shows up. It does not feel forced, it just feels natural.
What makes it special is not just the temperature, it is what it unlocks. After months of being inside, stressed, and just trying to get through the semester, this feels like a reset. It is a reminder that joy can be simple. Sitting outside, talking for hours, doing nothing but somehow feeling like everything at the same time.
There is always a speaker somewhere. Afrobeats, R&B, throwbacks, every corner of campus has its own soundtrack. Music becomes the heartbeat of the yard, blending conversations, laughter, and movement into one shared experience. You might not know everyone around you, but in that moment, it does not matter. Everyone is part of the same energy.
Moments like this feel different at an HBCU. There is culture, there is history, and there is a sense of belonging that does not need to be explained. It shows up in the way people connect, in the shared understanding, and in the feeling that this space was made for you.
And just like that, winter does not feel so long anymore.
