Spring at Howard just feels different.
The weather breaks, the Yard comes alive, and suddenly campus feels like a mix of productivity and celebration. Students are outside more, energy is higher, and the sense of community becomes even more visible. But with finals around the corner, it’s easy to get caught between wanting to enjoy the moment and needing to stay academically focused. Finding a way to do both is what makes this season so special.
Spring is the perfect time to reset your routine and reconnect with your environment. Taking your study sessions outside, going on walks between classes, or simply sitting on the Yard for a few moments can improve your mood and increase focus. Research shows that spending time outdoors can reduce stress and improve overall well-being, which is especially important during high-pressure academic periods. Being present in these moments allows you to recharge while still staying productive.
Spring is also one of the most active times on campus, with student organizations hosting events, pop-ups, and social gatherings. Attending these events allows you to build connections, strengthen your sense of community, and create memories that go beyond academics. Getting involved in campus life has been shown to enhance student satisfaction and engagement, making your college experience more fulfilling overall.
You don’t have to choose between fun and focus — the key is balance. Structuring your day so that you handle your academic responsibilities first allows you to enjoy your social time without guilt or stress. Creating this balance helps you stay motivated while still making the most of the Howard experience. When done intentionally, this season can be both productive and enjoyable.
Spring won’t last forever — but the memories will.
Be present. Enjoy the moment. Finish strong.
