How to Support Black Artists

Students at Howard University have notoriously praised black artists on campus. From Homecoming to Springfest. Some artists have been scared of coming to Howard because students can tend to overwhelm guest celebrities with their energy levels. However, it does show that students are dedicated fans and know how to support people when necessary. Howard students have proven that they can come together for a cause and be passionate about it. It would be great to see these same levels of excitement for Howard music artists. 

Supporting the Community 

Last week on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, J. Cole, a prominent rap artist and figure in the black community, visited Howard University's campus. Students stood outside for hours waiting to see their role model and inspiration. J. Cole has been visiting HBCU campuses all across the country and selling his cds. This was a great way to give back to black communities and spread joy. I believe we should all have this type of mindset and be constantly thinking about how we can give back and support our community. Overall, it was a great time, and students got to meet their favorite artist. 

Supporting Your Peers 

While it’s great to support celebrities who have grown to fame, it’s also important to support artists in our very own community. From alums to your very own peers. This black history month. Please make sure that you are giving back to at least one artist this month. COFA has shows that you can support and presentations. Please be on the lookout for those and follow accounts such as the HU Fine Arts Council so you can know when upcoming student events are. Support black art! You can also research locals in DC with black art that you can support as well.
