After weeks on end of long classes, late night assignments, organization and internship responsibilities - Howard students are more than ready for a week to press pause. Whether you’re enjoying this break in tropical paradise or opting for a staycation, a key element that sets the tone for maximum relaxation is a good playlist.
Firstly, decide what vibe you’re going for. Are you catching flights to Puerto Rico or Miami? Search for songs that feel like summer. Afro beats and Reggaeton instantly create an upbeat warm atmosphere, consider adding Raindance by Dave & Tems into your shuffle. Participating in Howard University Alternative Spring Break? Fill the long road trip with sounds from Brent Faiyaz’s latest record Icon.
My personal staycation has been filled with internship applications and slow mornings, so naturally I have been enjoying the relaxing rhythms of Olivia Dean’s album Art of Loving. Grounding your sound will make for an intentional and immersive experience.
Some Billboard hits people have been loving lately include Bad Bunny’s DTMF, Kehlani’s Folded, and E85 by Don Toliver. These cheerful tunes all have potential to be the sound of the summer, so give them a test whirl this week.
Thankfully, in the age of streaming, our platforms have learned our taste and can make curating easier. For Spotify users, try out the DJ feature to stretch your listening experience. All in all, remember we only have so much time away from classes to nurture our body and spirit. The right playlist can amplify your experience and turn even the simplest break into a moment of lasting memories.
