Little-Known Howard Resources That Will Help You Develop Your Career

Howard University Resource Hub 

Going to Howard University is an amazing opportunity. Not only does it have a great name, history, and people, but it is also amazing at setting students up for success. There are many resources at Howard that are here to help you in your career development. Howard already has a landing page for the majority of its career help. I will dive into 3 lesser known career based learning opportunities. 

In-Person Skills Labs 

The first resource I discovered was a new program created by HU Learning. This program is every second and third Wednesday of the month and focuses on a new skill for students to develop. These labs are meant to help students learn how to collaborate and build confidence working with new people.  They offer both virtual and in-person lessons, and each month is focused on a different theme. This month, the theme is Trust & Belonging. The purpose of this workshop is to teach participants how to build a strong team and a working environment. The Virtual lessons are hosted on the second Wednesday of every month and will be held on March 11th at 10 AM. The in-person lesson will be held on March 18th at 1:00 PM and requires registration.  If you’re interested in more virtual or in-person events, visit hr.howard.edu/hu-learning-hours-0 for the upcoming dates. 

Career Advising Services 

The career advising services page is a great hub for all information pertaining to gaining employment. It helps you figure out where to start, build out your resume, and plan out your whole career path. This process is available for online or in-person use, which is great for anyone who prefers different modes of learning or are having location based issues. This single page is the perfect start to learning how to improve your standing when it comes to future careers. 

Career Fairs

The most notable way of getting career assistance at Howard is by joining Handshake and turning on notifications for upcoming career fairs. Howard University often hosts more than 2 a semester, and it’s a great way of getting to know companies that are looking for specific talents. All you have to do is show up in a nice suit, bring a resume, and be ready to talk. Participating in the career fairs is also a great way to get out of your comfort zone and practice your elevator pitch on companies you may be more interested in. To find dates for upcoming career fairs, create a Hanshake account, click the events tab, and look up “Career Fair.” The next one will be held on Wednesday, February 25th, and does require you to register. 

Overall, Howard University does a great job of setting its students up for success. Whether it’s in-person or online, there are many resources for you take advantage of while here.
