College students today are no strangers to stress. Trying to manage class, homework, exams, internships, leadership roles, jobs, and somewhat of a social life can feel like there is no time left for ourselves. The thing about academic pressure is that it starts slow and suddenly you feel like you are drowning in responsibilities, at least I know I have. The good news? Stress does not have to overwhelm your semester. Use these three tips to help manage your academic stress a little bit better this Spring.Â
Often, academic stress is less about the workload and more about not knowing where to start. When assignments, deadlines, meetings, and other various work only live in your head (or random apps) everything can feel urgent and jumbled. Â
A useful tip is to begin by writing everything down, or if you’re like me, creating strict to-do lists with deadlines in your notes app. If that doesn’t work for you, I also think buying cute physical planners like this or downloading an app like Goodnotes can inspire you to write your tasks down. You can also break up bigger assignments into smaller tasks to make them more approachable. For example, if you have a large research project try breaking it down like this:Â
Find ten sourcesÂ
Create an outlineÂ
Write introduction Â
Write three body paragraphsÂ
Write conclusion and add reference pageÂ
Revise and incorporate edits Â
Seeing your workload mapped out makes it more approachable, and taking small steps towards your goals makes them less daunting.Â
College can make you feel like you need to say yes to everything. Whether it's a club, an internship, volunteer work, social events, or picking up extra shifts at work, the vast amount of opportunities college brings is inevitable. And while it can be hard to turn something down, over commitment is one of the fastest paths to burnout. Â
It is important to take a step back and ask yourself a few questions:Â Â
What commitments truly align with your goals?Â
Which ones drain your energy?Â
Where can you realistically scale back?Â
It is okay to allow yourself free time to rest and relax. Letting go or pausing one obligation does not mean failure. It means that you care about your well-being, and you know you can’t be your best self when stretched too thin. Sometimes, managing stress is not about doing more, but doing less with intent.Â
Â
If stress begins to feel unbearable, seek support. Some signs to seek support could be stress that is affecting your sleep, appetite, concentration, or mood. Howard offers multiple resources including counseling services, academic advisors, the student advocacy office, tutoring services, and even emergency hotlines. Â
A healthy reminder that reaching out is not a sign of weakness; it is an act of bravery and self-love. Do not be afraid to talk to teachers about academic extensions, meet with an advisor to discuss your courses, or schedule an appointment with the counseling office. You do not have to face academic stress alone.Â
Â
Academic stress may just be an inevitable aspect of college life, but you do not need to suffer in silence. By getting organized, managing your commitments, and seeking help, you have the ability to create a better balance. Success in college is not just about grades and opportunities, but also how to take care of yourself. Â
