There are many cliches about the power of planning, and in the case of learning Spanish, they are correct. To learn anything, especially if you want to reach your goals as fast as possible, you must map out how and when you will do it.

However, when you need to learn the foundation of a language, a little grammar knowledge can go a long way. Knowing the basic rules can boost your confidence when writing or speaking Spanish. A solid grasp of basic grammar also makes it easier to tackle more complex structures later on.

Rather than avoiding grammar altogether, try studying the minimum level you need to begin expressing yourself. To have simple conversations in Spanish, you should learn the present tense and then at least one past tense. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend starting with the preterite as your go-to form of the past tense.

Reading in a foreign language might seem challenging, but if you find stories or articles at your level, it can be a huge help. In his top tips to learn a language fast, polyglot Olly Richards suggests starting with short, simple dialogues that you would find in any beginner Spanish textbook.

Secondly, working on your accent can improve your listening comprehension. Many learners struggle to understand spoken Spanish initially because the speech rate tends to be much faster than in English, which makes pronunciation challenging to understand.

Committing to learning Spanish, or any new language, is a big undertaking. But the rewards can be truly life-changing. As cheesy as it sounds, you are beginning a journey that can bring about personal fulfillment and allow you to connect with people from different cultures and countries.

What has worked really well is sticking to the no-speaking English rule. I can say this with confidence by comparing my experience in learning French to learning Spanish. Upholding this constraint has worked better for me than any trick, class or piece of software.

A harder challenge which has just recently become more manageable is having conversations with Spaniards. Conversations with other learners of a language is much easier than speaking with natives. Because their vocabulary is more limited, and their speech slower, learners are easier to understand.

In each lesson, we highlight the linguistic and cultural diversity of a different Spanish-speaking country, focusing on the words, expressions and cultural aspects associated with it. This enriches your learning experience, and builds your confidence and vocabulary so that you can hold conversations with locals in any Spanish-speaking country.

If you do a 121 course, which a lot of intensives abroad will be, it can sometimes become a bit didactic with the teacher doing most of the talking. I think I personally would have benefited from some 121 but also some group work. Clearly, communicate your preferred learning style to the school and your teacher before you start. If you would prefer learning in a group make sure this is available at your school

This all depends on a few things including, time and money. I wanted to learn Spanish to travel Latin America. Therefore ideally I needed a school in Latin America as Spanish in Spain is slightly different from that in Latin America. In Latin America, there are two countries that come up on top for learning Spanish: Guatemala and Colombia.

Both countries have a neutral accent and are good value. I chose Guatemala initially as it was cheaper and they speak slower. I later also took classes in Colombia which was a great experience too. I would highly recommend learning a language in its country of origin ie french in France and Italian in Italy. You will learn from native speakers and also get an insight into the culture and place you are studying. Perfect if the course is your fires step in exploring that country.

There is a huge difference in the budget for example in learning Spanish in Latin America compared to learning Spanish in Spain. When thinking about a budget consider how many hours you want to study and if you want a homestay or not.

If your goal is to study until you have a decent fluency then I would recommend doing a maximum of 4 hours a day over a longer time. 4-6 weeks should be a good start. Also, I would recommend changing schools every 2-3 weeks. That way you get a slightly different teaching style and to also enjoy a new place while you are learning.

The reasons were that both countries are the cheapest places to learn to speak Spanish, plus both have reasonably neutral accents. I ended up deciding on learning Spanish in Guatemala as it ticked a few more of my boxes, and it was also a better starting point for my travels being in Central America and from there I could work my way down through South America, taking further Spanish classes in Colombia.

A big part of the way you are taught in Guatemala is that they get you talking as much as possible. Chatting about your day, life in general, and trying to use less and fewer words in your native tongue and more and more in Spanish. This way of learning really suited me, it was the more formal learning of the verbs and sentence structure that got me.

For Americans and Canadians, however, the choice is far less obvious. Unless you have a clear reason or inclination to learn one type of Spanish, you may be tempted to learn the language from whatever people or resources are available, no matter the source.

So I recommend that you choose one variety of Spanish, and learn it exclusively for one to two years. This will allow ample time for your new Spanish "identity" to develop, and prevent your accent from becoming an unusual mixture of influences.

Better understanding of English: Much of the vocabulary of English has Latin origins, so you will find as you study Spanish that you have a better understanding of your native vocabulary. Similarly, Spanish and English share Indo-European roots, so their grammars are similar. There is perhaps no more effective way to learn English grammar than by studying the grammar of another language, for the study forces you to think about how your language is structured. 2351a5e196
