Well, you can’t, really. Not like you might ordinarily join something.
I mean, think about it. If we had membership cards and membership rolls and mailing lists, how invisible would we be? If we had meetings and officers and annual conferences like other organizations do, we’d all have to participate under assumed names and wear disguises. How stupid would that be?
No, you can’t really just up and join the invisibility revolution like you would a club. We have to find you.
Those who go invisible develop a kind of sixth sense for identifying others on the verge of making the break who are ripe with disillusionment and may just need a nudge in the right direction. If you feel yourself drawn to the invisible way of life and begin to incorporate its principles and practices into everyday ordinary life and conversation, your likelihood of encountering an adept in our craft will certainly grow, as will the evidence of your readiness. At some point the offer of a formal apprenticeship might very well come your way.
Although such apprenticeships have been the principal means of transmitting our knowledge and craft until now, we no longer feel this to be necessary. The teachings are now being consolidated and committed to writing, organized for posterity into guides and lessons on paper and audiotape. We hope to make this information widely available with the least possible compromise of our principles and craft secrets. A few of our senior adepts have offered to expose themselves to unwelcome attention if need be to spread the word and make invisibility more widely understood and available to those in need. Their sacrifice will, at their insistence, remain unheralded.
What’s more, going invisible borrows extensively from the wisdom traditions of many other cultures adapted to meet the challenges we face here and now. Whenever possible we refer aspirants to the original sources for intermediate and advanced study. Fortunately these are widely available today and can still be consulted freely with few restrictions. The same is true for recent research in the hard and social sciences that inform our practice no less than the teachings of past masters of mind and spirit.
Depending on individual proclivities and learning styles, it is now quite possible to advance far in the practice through committed self-study. Start with Dr. Jules Tranquillo’s How to Go Invisible and go from there. Share the teachings with others and encourage open discussion of likes and dislikes. Every podcast from Doc Jules’ guide challenges enough econoculture complacency to stir up some lively back-and-forth. Keep in mind that invisibility is a relatively new art form and we are all among its earliest pioneers. Earnest debate and lively dissent are indications of vigorous progress.
Pursue intermediate and advanced studies and practices as this knowledge becomes available. Take special note of lessons that seem to come to your attention quite by happenstance but give you just what you need when you need it. Remember talks with people who pass through your life almost unnoticed leaving behind surprisingly helpful insights into your condition. When the invisibility student is ready, the teacher very likely has already come and gone. Who was that guy?
Join us then by simply doing it, by adopting the invisible way of life in your own unique way in your own one-of-a-kind circumstance. Break free of econoculture. Screen out all the lies, quit caring who wins, treat your attention like a treasured possession and swear off squandering it. Apply more of your precious psychic energy to exploring and cultivating your own inner world, nourishing your circle of love, and creating for yourself a secure inner order against the ever-impending threat of chaos (until, that is, you are ready to face that threat head-on, a topic for another day).
Get over your special self and take a deep dive into the sea of our common humanity. That is our true membership. Join at will. We’ll find you down there.
