If you are using an even older iPad with an even older iOS version, there is NO native Apple iOS weather app or weather widget and you will need to use a third party weather app from the iOS/iPadOS App Store, if such apps are still avaialblle and compatible with older iPad/iOS devices.

Apple acquired a popular weather app Dark Sky in 2020. Dark Sky was famous for its accuracy, providing hyperlocal, hyper-accurate results. Users could report the weather in their location, and Apple has retained that feature in the new Weather app.

A few of these entities provide weather apps of their own, and they are some of the best apps for iPhone and iPad. Each of these apps has its own "hook," a selling point to differentiate themselves from competitors. Weather features are generally the same so it largely comes down to data accuracy and uniqueness.

The Weather Company, the parent of The Weather Channel, remains one of the premier weather sources for developers and users alike. Its features include live Doppler radar maps, storm watches, and hurricane trackers to warn users of heavy rain, heat waves, incoming floods, and more.

NOAA Weather provides standard weather features such as radar maps, 7-day and 24-hour forecasts, and hourly forecasts. Its hook is the exclusive sun and moon information from sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset. NOAA says this data can be helpful to anglers and hunters.

"Apple acquired popular weather app Dark Sky in 2020. Dark Sky was famous for its accuracy, providing hyperlocal, hyper-accurate results."

Yep. WAS famous. Past tense. As in, no longer famous for. Dark Sky has gone to shite for accuracy since Apple took it over. How did they screw this up so badly? I was a Dark Sky evangelist during its days a a private company. "Hyper-accurate results" perfectly describes what its forecasts used to deliver. It was practically psychic when it came to predicting weather. I was initially thrilled when Apple bought the company--I figured it would have the financial resources to be even better. Instead, it has only gotten worse and worse. Forget about forecasts--Dark Sky can't even manage to get the "current weather" consistently right in NYC. I have been rained on so many times when Dark Sky showed a 0% chance of rain in its forecast that I don't even bother checking it any longer. RIP Dark Sky... it was the best weather app ever until Apple got its hands on it.

The short answer is Iridium data link based ones, requiring subscription and/or per-download payment. The only portable unit known to me is the Golze ones, which are often recommended on European forums such as this one. If the plane is equipped with a Garmin GSR56, then a Garmin Connext weather subscription will work, too. It is likely to be more expensive, though.

XM, the company behind the popular satellite radio service, began broadcasting datalink weather from its satellites in 2003. During the 2000s, most pilots received this weather data with either installed avionics and glass cockpits, or with one of the Garmin handheld GPS receivers, like the 696 or 796. The monthly fee of around $30 was a small price to pay to have near real-time nationwide radar imagery available in flight.

The iPad then hit the scene in 2010 and quickly became the portable GPS of choice, and pilots moved on from handheld GPS receivers in favor of the less-expensive tablet from Apple. About a year later, WxWorx/Baron, the weather provider behind the XM service, released a receiver that allowed you receive this weather data and display it on your iPad with the ForeFlight app.

Unlike the initial release of satellite weather in 2003, this product never really took off with pilots. It was clunky to set up, required numerous wires strung around the cockpit for power, antennas and an external WiFi transmitter. The product was also challenged by the simultaneous release of numerous portable ADS-B receivers around the same time. These by contrast were easy-to-use wireless devices, containing an internal battery, and required no monthly subscription fees.

Fast-forward to today, where XM has since completed a merger with former rival Sirius, creating the new SiriusXM satellite radio company. After the merger, SiriusXM rolled out a new lower-cost datalink weather service using WSI as the provider, and delivered it over a different satellite system than the original XM/WxWorx/Baron broadcast.

To receive the SiriusXM/WSI service you need a new receiver/antenna, of which there are only a few currently available. The first receiver was released by Garmin back in February and allows Garmin 796 owners to pick up and display the weather feed on handheld GPS devices. The latest entrant to the market was just announced yesterday, called the SiriusXM SXAR1, and brings this same high-quality weather to the iPad.

SiriusXM satellite downlink weather is not for everyone, especially when compared to the reliability and completeness of the subscription-free ADS-B weather broadcast. But for pilots operating in remote regions or for those who prefer the premium weather products available on satellite weather, the SXAR1 weather receiver for iPad is sure to be a hit.

I have had XM radio ever since it came out. The problem is not the cost of the service, but the cheap, crappy radios. XM allows you to suspend the service during winter months for 4 months. You used to be able to just cancel the service and hook it up again in the spring or whenever you wanted to, but now they have a $75 re-connection fee. They tried that on me this time and I reassured them that if they charged me $75 to hook up a radio again that quit working that I would cancel their service and only use ADSB. Interesting how fast they waived the re-connect fee. None the less the service really stinks. Now you have to pay for not only the weather but an additional charge for the music. I have another XM radio and it is only supposed to be a $7.00 charge to add another. They are going to choke themselves out of the market especially when pilots start demanding better images on the ADSB and they start appearing. The puck style radios have failed multiple times. I am on my 4th one now and a cost of $300 each time. If the GPS fails to pick up the antenna, it is a bench charge of $400. Neither one is cost effective. Garmin and their partners XM/Sirius have a real racket going on. Until they can guarantee their equipment to be reliable, I would recommend no one fall for the gimmicks.

I am sorry but we do not support 3rd party weather APPS. However, if using an iPhone or an iPad, our Garmin Connect Mobile APP is solely responsible for pushing regional weather information coming from legacy weather stations on most airports. The weather information is sent across the internet through the Connect Mobile APP to your Approach S60's weather widget.

Please note, due to security updates by Apple, the iOS requires that you keep the Connect APP open at all times to have the weather data pushed to your watch. The Connect APP does not need to be in front active on your iPhone or iPad, but ensure your Approach S60 will sync with the Connect APP and then leave the APP open and suspended in the background of your iPhone or iPad.

With temperatures dropping, we've started to get inquiries regarding the capabilities of IceCase in cold weather conditions. In cold temperatures, the battery life of iPads typically drops dramatically, limiting operational times during outdoor use. Although more robust field testing will need to occur, and we have no guarantees at this point, initial results suggest using IceCase can greatly increase the battery life of iPads in the winter.

Tap the star to access, add, and adjust your favorite locations. If you want to know of any rain in the surrounding area, you may modify the radius. This can be useful to track the weather in a region, such as when you work in one location and plan an outdoor activity several miles away.

Next, choose a widget. RainViewer offers several different widgets. Some show current conditions and the short-term forecast, while others provide a weather radar map of various sizes. Swipe through the widgets, select the one you want, then choose + Add Widget.

Widgets provide very quick and easy access to your favourite apps, content, or anything on your device. The same is the case with the weather widget. You will not have to follow tap and swipe on multiple home screens to see the daily weather forecast. Having a weather widget on the home screen can be much more convenient to get instant weather updates.

Now you are at the last step which is choosing your desired location. You can search your desired location in the search box. After selecting a specific location, all the location-based apps such as WhatsApp will be updated to the new location including the weather app.

Widgets can be added to the home screen of your device directly. Moreover, you can place the widget anywhere on the screen. So, next time when you find yourself searching for how to change the weather location on iPad, make sure you have quick access to it on the home screen. You can add a widget by following these steps:

You can peruse forecasts by the hour for up to 10 days (note: with forecasts, expect decreasing accuracy over time in any app). The app covers all the most important weather aspects, including temperature, wind, humidity, dew point, feels-like temperature, UV index, barometric pressure and visibility. It also offers severe weather alerts and surfaces weather news. ff782bc1db
