I am looking for a (mostly) phonetic Korean keyboard layout, so that for example theĀ  corresponds with the m key, instead of the a key. I tried to create one for myself, using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, which worked, although the characters didn't organise themselves in the block way hangul does. Has anybody got a solution to this problem or ought I learn a new layout?

Microsoft and Local Language computing: Microsoft has been consistently working to provide local language computing in Indian languages for over two decades since the launch of Project Bhasha in 1998, allowing users to input localized text easily and quickly using the Indian Language Input tool. Microsoft is also leveraging AI and Deep Neural Networks to improve real-time language translation for Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and now expanding it to real-time language translation for Telugu. Microsoft also recently announced support for email addresses in multiple Indian languages across most of its email apps and services. Also, as part of the latest Windows update, Microsoft added Tamil 99 virtual keyboard to Windows 10. Through its global Local Language Program (LLP), Microsoft provides people access to technology in their native language. This includes Language Interface Packs for Indian languages like Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam, amongst others.

The Stone Phonetic typefaces, available for the Macintosh and Windows platforms, were designed by John Renner of Adobe Systems and released in 1992 by The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) as phonetic companions to ITC Stone Serif and ITC Stone Sans typefaces. The designs consist of more than 330 symbols in sans and serif styles, and conform to the IPA glyph complement finalized at the 1989 Kiel conference (with the exception of contour tones).

The Unicode Phonetic Keyboard, developed by Mark Huckvale at UCL, is a freely available installable keyboard for Windows PCs that provides a convenient keyboard layout for the word-processing of phonetic transcription using Unicode fonts. The installation package comes complete with two Unicode fonts: Doulos and Charis that have been developed by SIL.

Maybe you already switch between keyboard layouts for different languages. The particular language keyboard which is currently selected on your PC is indicated at the bottom right of the Windows screen, next to the time and date. If you click there, you get a list of the keyboards currently available on your PC.

Once you have installed the Unicode Phonetic Keyboard, it becomes available in the list shown there, just as if it were the keyboard for an additional language. When you select it, the keys produce the phonetic symbols which have been mapped on to them. So, typing Shift+D doesn't produce capital D. Instead it producesĀ  for the voiced dental fricative. When you want a schwa, you type @ but you get . The velar nasal is Shift + N. And so on. The quick way to see what each key is mapped onto is to start the Windows On-screen Keyboard app. Just type osk into the search box. You could print out the key correspondences for reference, but you'll quickly learn most of them because they're very logical. Notice that many of the less common symbols require you to press the "Alt Gr" key instead of Shift. That's how you get symbols like [ Ā  Ā  ].

You can switch between the available keyboards either by using the mouse to click on the name of the keyboard--or the quick way is to press the Windows key + Space; this lets you toggle through the available keyboards.

If you're just wanting to insert a few symbols and do not want the hassle of installing a keyboard, another way to easily insert phonetic symbols is to copy-paste them from websites. You could use, for example, the following:

This page allows you to easily type phonetic transcriptions of English words in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). You can edit your text in the box and then copy it to your document, e-mail message, etc.

In order to activate the phonetic Russian Cyrillic keyboard Ā on a Windows laptop, follow the steps below, noting that some steps may vary slightly depending on your laptop:

Note that You can load the on-screen keyboard if you have any difficulties determining the correct key or combination of keys for a particular Russian character; simply click the Start key, type Keyboard and you will find an option to make it appear on the screen.

Step 4: A Russian phonetic keyboard should now appear in the panel to your left. Be sure to tick Show Input menu in menu bar as this will allow you to toggle between keyboards manually from the menu at the top of your Mac. For ease of accessibility, you may also configure the Caps Lock key to switch between keyboards.

Step 5: Click the flag at the top right-hand corner of your Mac in order to checkthat the keyboard was added as intended. Clicking Show keyboard viewer will allow you to clarify precisely which keys correspond to various Russian letters.

Persian phonetic keyboard layout is for Windows users who are interested to profit from their skill in typing with Latin-based keyboards in typing Persian texts faster and more conveniently. It is installable on all versions of Windows from Windows XP to Windows 10 (it should work on Windows 11 as well but I have not tested it). In this keyboard layout, Persian characters are ordered as phonetically as possible so that by typing a Latin key you can get its Persian equivalent. For example, by typing "L" you get tag_hash_134. Regarding sounds that have several characters in Persian alphabet (e.g. S's, Z's), the most frequent character is available on the normal state of the keyboard and the other homophone characters are available on the Shift state next to the first key. For example, by pressing "S", you get tag_hash_136. For typing tag_hash_137 and tag_hash_138, you must first hold Shift key down and then press "S" and "D" respectively.

Here are the characters you can type by simply pressing a key. Move your mouse over a key to learn about the character you can get by pressing it. To locate keys more easily, Latin characters printed on Latin keyboards are written below each key in gray:

As you know, there are two Alt keys on a keyboard. One in the left and the other in the right. Here are the characters you can type by holding right Alt key down and then pressing a key. Alternatively, you can hold down Ctrl and either right or left Alt key down and then press a key:

Please download and unzip perphon.zip. Open the folder, click on "setup.exe" and wait until a window appears indicating that Persian (Phonetic) has been successfully installed. Click on Close button to exit. Now you must add Persian as an input language to your computer and set "Persian (Phonetic)" as its default keyboard layout. This process varies depending on your Windows version. Please refer to online guides about installing keyboard layouts on your target Windows. The following screenshot is from my Windows 10.

This page is intended to help you get phonetic symbols into a word-processed document. It is intended primarily for people running Word 97 or later under Windows 98 or later, using the Unicode phonetic symbol font routinely supplied by Microsoft.

If you haven't already got this font installed, download it and install it. Alternatively, you may prefer to use some other Unicode phonetic font, e.g. Arial Unicode MS, Charis SIL (download), Doulos SIL (download) or Gentium (download).

In Word, you should disable certain AutoCorrect functions that will otherwise automatically make undesirable symbol changes, notably the "correcting" of i to I (since you may want to use the phonetic symbol i on its own).Be careful over confusingly similar phonetic symbols.

...the best way seems to be to use method 2(a) above (for a single symbol)to create a Word document with the string of symbols you want, and then copy (ctrl-C) and paste (ctrl-V) them into Excel/Powerpoint etc.; or to use a virtual keyboard. This works with any Unicode-enabled application, but not of course with those that are not Unicode-compliant.Author: John Wells. My home page.Page created 2002 05 31.
