Shift managers work in partnership with the store manager to create store plans and ensure the team is working together to make every moment right for our customers. They promote an atmosphere of engagement and pride in creating the Starbucks Experience and achieving goals. (Note, this role is only available in Massachusetts.)

I have a disability that prevents me from standing more than 20-30mins, and I have a wheelchair. Otherwise I'd love this job. Realistically, though, could it work in the store? Are there partners in chairs? Managers, your thoughts?

Thousands of Starbucks employees nationwide are walking off the job on Thursday in the largest work stoppage in the five-decade history of the company, the union representing the workers said in a statement to ABC News.

Employees at hundreds of unionized stores are calling on Starbucks to bargain labor contracts that would set conditions at those workplaces, such as pay, benefits and staffing levels, Starbucks Workers United said.

Moe Mills, a Starbucks employee at a store in St. Louis, told ABC News that workers there plan to participate in the strike because the company has refused to bargain with the union over staffing decisions tied to the sales uptick associated with promotional events like \"Red Cup Day.\"

The store where Mills works typically brings in about $8,000 in sales each day but promotional events add at least an additional $3,000 in revenue, which amounts to a nearly 40% increase in business, Mills said.

\"It's degrading and embarrassing to work in stores that are so short staffed on promotional days that we give customers poor service,\" Mills said. \"When customers spend $10 or $12 on a drink, they shouldn't have to wait 45 minutes or get a lukewarm drink when it should be hot.\"

\"We are aware that Workers United has publicized a day of action at a small subset of our U.S. stores this week. We remain committed to working with all partners, side-by-side, to elevate the everyday, and we hope that Workers United's priorities will shift to include the shared success of our partners and working to negotiate union contracts for those they represent,\" the company spokesperson said.

Alex Yeager, a worker at a Starbucks store in Albany, New York, who belongs to the union, previously told ABC News in a statement that he expects the company to provide the raises to nonunion stores only.

\"Once again, Starbucks is responding to our bargaining demands, but they're implementing them in nonunion stores and denying these new benefits to workers in stores that are unionizing or already voted to join the union,\" Yeager said.

A labor board judge ruled in September that Starbucks had illegally provided previous pay increases and benefits to nonunion employees without offering them to unionized workers. Bloomberg Law first reported on the ruling.

Jack Miller, who has worked at the Shattuck Avenue location as a shift supervisor for two years and was on the picket line Friday afternoon, said employee concerns about safety issues and short staffing have gone unaddressed for months, and were further compounded when business picked up as the school year began in August.

Miller said he and other employees have experienced symptoms of heat exhaustion while working behind the bar, which gets hotter than other parts of the store. Using his own handheld thermometer, he recorded 89-degree temperatures behind the bar.

Retail was the most active industry for work stoppages, with 125 strikes out of the 314 overall. Starbucks Inc. alone faced at least 107 strikes. But even without the walkouts at the coffee retailer, as unions focused on organizing its local stores, last year was still a record setting year for worker actions, according to Bloomberg Law analyst Robert Combs.

Manufacturing and health care were two other sectors that had dozens of work stoppages last year. But of the at least 222,306 workers involved in stoppages, more than 137,000 were educators, researchers, and other academic professionals.

One of the most defining work stoppages of 2022 was also its largest: a six week strike at the University of California that involved approximately 48,000 graduate student workers. The strike was the largest at any college or university since at least 1990, according to the database.

Graduate workers represented by the United Auto Workers went on strike after they were unable to reach consensus with the university system over pay increases and workplace protections for sexual harassment and discrimination.

The strike ended on Dec. 23 after the graduate workers ratified new contracts. The agreement included wage increases of up to 66% over the life of the agreement and additional workplace protections against bullying and harassment, according to the union.

Despite large numbers of educators striking, there were plenty of other contract negotiations that narrowly avoided work stoppages due to diligent negotiations, said American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten. Stimulus money from the American Rescue Plan Act also helped school districts meet educator demands and avoid strikes, she said.

"I have learned so much about the retail experience from working in our stores," he wrote in the letter. "To keep us close to the culture and our customers, as well as to our challenges and opportunities, I intend to continue working in stores for a half day each month, and I expect each member of the leadership team to also ensure our support centers stay connected and engaged in the realities of our stores for discussion and improvement," he continued.

He called it a "refounding of Starbucks" and said the company will work to improve many aspects of the business including long-term hiring and retention of employees and investing in their wages and stores.

This week, hundreds of workers went on strike again, alleging the company has been issued more than 70 official complaints from the National Labor Relations Board, according to CBS Minnesota, which reports workers at three Starbucks locations in the Twin Cities planned to strike. But the company has also accused the union of refusing to bargain in good faith, filing 100 Unfair Labor Practice charges against it.

But do boycotts actually work? Is voting with your wallet as powerful as consumers hope it is? According to Yakov Bart, associate professor of marketing at Northeastern University, the success of a boycott often comes down to the brand, not the consumers.

"To keep us close to the culture and our customers, as well as to our challenges and opportunities, I intend to continue working in stores for a half day each month, and I expect each member of the leadership team to also ensure our support centers stay connected and engaged in the realities of our stores for discussion and improvement," he wrote in a letter to employees Thursday morning.

His pledge comes at a rocky time for the company's relationship with its baristas. As of Friday, more than 190 company-owned Starbucks locations have voted to unionize, according to National Labor Relations Board data. Workers have cited unsafe working conditions, understaffing and unreliable scheduling as some of the reasons why they're in favor of a union.

Having a CEO work in stores is new for Seattle-based Starbucks, but not unprecedented among big companies. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu and his executive team make DoorDash deliveries once a month, for example.

On Wednesday, workers at more than 100 U.S. Starbucks stores went on strike across the country, demanding that Starbucks come to the bargaining table and hammer out labor agreements. It was the third time that workers have held a nationwide strike.

Starbucks Workers United, the union organizing the workers, said it wanted to send Narasimhan a message that the CEO transition is an opportunity to break with the past and partner with the union. Schultz had a long history of opposing unionization.

When I took my struggles to Starbucks, the company listened and showed me that it cared about my problems. I was offered the opportunity to transfer to a store closer to my home so that I could have a shorter commute, and I now know how to indicate my preferred availability for shifts, so that I have a better chance of planning my life outside of work.

This tends to happen because places like Starbucks will use a captive portal, and not allow connections out (save some rare exceptions) until you authenticate with the network. In Starbucks' case, this means agreeing to a terms of service.

I then tried going to the Starbucks app and tapping the Gift button. Gift cards show up but are all blank and clicking on any of them do nothing. Looked for a Starbucks update and found one. After update, it still doesn't work. Has anyone else noticed this? What a bummer. It was so easy to gift my kid, now I can't. I googled and didn't find anything. Thanks. ff782bc1db
