Whenever someone sends me a photo, whether it be a screenshot or normal photo, they will not display. It will not even let me click it or download it. I have to ask for the person to send it through Snapchat or Messenger. When sending photos or videos, they will not send through iMessage. They will barely send through MMS, and if they do, the quality is awful. Everyone I send or receive from are iPhone users. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and currently on iOS 16.3.1. They use to be labeled HEIC, but I changed some settings according to Google and they now just say JPEG, as seen in the photos I attached. It also does this when connected to Wi-Fi. First, we suggest making sure the MMS and Group messages are enabled in Settings > Messages. Once there, scroll to the section labeled SMS/MMS. Beside MMS Messaging and Group Messaging are both enabled.

This fixed the issue on my iPhone 13 where 22 messages were unread. The issue is likely due to conversation threads where the most recent message is read and the ones before have been left unread. Apple needs to find a fix. If Siri can detect these unread messages, they are known to the iOS and must show up in unread messages. This is a long standing issue continuing over several generations of iOS

The similar issue happened to me on my Mac. There was 1 red notification badge on Messages app on Mac (macOS Ventura 13.5.2), even though there was no unread messages at all. As @ryingg suggested, I told Siri on Mac like "Read my message". Siri started reading a message that I didn't recognize (maybe a junk message?).
