I'm traveling to Spain soon from the UK for a short trip. I have an American passport, and because of this I haven't gotten an actual boarding pass from Ryanair, but rather a document that tells me to go to their check-in/bag drop to get a visa check done since my passport in non-EU.

That's not really a big deal to me, but the thing I don't understand is how Ryanair says you need a printed boarding pass if you're non-EU otherwise you'll be charged some absurd "printing fee" for them to print it at the airport for you. But I literally don't have the option to print my actual boarding pass before arriving because I can't access it until I do the visa check at the airport?

I'm assuming that in this situation they mean I need to have that "stand-in" boarding pass printed before I arrive, which I plan on doing. And I've already checked-in online for my flight. But will I get charged to print out the real boarding pass when I arrive? Can't seem to find any clear info about this anywhere online.

I actually had very similar happen the last time I used Ryanair - only I didn't actually discover the barcode hadn't printed until I arrived at the airport! I had printed all the boarding passes directly from the "Print" link on the site (i.e. not from a separate PDF viewer).

In 2008, Ryanair became the first airline anywhere in the world to ask passengers to check in online before reaching the airport. The aim was to cut costs: drastically reducing the number of travellers who had to see a check-in agent at a desk, and commensurately allowing Ryanair to pay less for space at the departure airport.

Yes. In August, Ryanair was heavily criticised after charging two elderly passengers 110 at London Stansted airport, after the couple inadvertently checked in for their inbound rather than outbound flight to France.

Some background: Ryanair has been conducting a campaign to try to persuade passengers not to buy tickets for its flights through online travel agents (OTAs). One aspect of this involves requiring some passengers who do book through an OTA to go through a series of verification checks before being allowed to check in.

One theory is that the airline has a new policy of asking some passengers who opt not to select a seat to queue up for a paper boarding pass, in a bid to increase the proportion choosing and paying for a specific seat.

Social media users had lobbed criticism at the airline over the weekend. Some included apparent screen grabs that seemed to show the Ryanair app saying to "get your boarding pass now and avoid queuing at the airport by adding a seat."

On top of reserved seats, Ryanair has a slew of other fees that its passengers can encounter. They include asking customers to pay to check in at the airport, to get their boarding passes printed out at the counter and to check luggage, among others.

Hi, Just learned Ryanair at lisbon airport requires printed boarding pass for non shengen citizens flying within EU. I have early flight tomorrow lisbon to bordeaux. Does anyone have experience printing bosrding pass at terminal 2? Nothing online about kiosks, seems to be bare bones terminal for cheap flights. I do not have access to printer. Thank you.

For the record, i did NOT need a printed boarding pass on Ryanair from Prague to Budapest. (Us citizen) My boarding pass did not ask doxument check and i flew thru security and gates onto the plane with just my phone. I did everything using their app.

Apparently, if you don't select and pay for a seat you will have to queue at the airport for a printed boarding card, you can no longer print your own. But if you do select and pay for a seat you can use either mobile, paper or both boarding cards before getting to the airport.

There was no problems booking in online and printing off boarding cards. Very good selection of very cheap booze and cigarettes on board too and no problem moving to any empty seats once the safety belts were allowed to be unfastened.

After some initial skepticism, this seems to be true (and only a few days old) - in part at least. Unconfirmed rumour is that the last 20 people without allocated seating to check in for a flight will be forced to either (i) pay for a seat to get their boarding pass immediately) or (ii) queue at check in to collect a paper boarding pass (for no charge). This seems to be in response to (growing?) numbers of people waiting until the very last minute to check in to get a 'premium' seat for free, as these are allocated last. This 'trick' is something I've seen pushed a lot on social media so I can kinda see where Ryanair are coming from (in some respects). The real killer with this of course is not just that you have to queue, but do so before security. I think you may only be able to collect it up to two hours before flight time as well - not sure about that though.

It happened me yesterday flying from Manchester to Cork. And I doubt I was one of the last 20 to check in. I checked in not long after check in opened. Had to join the queue at the desk at the airport to get a print out pass.

Booking priority boarding gives you overhead bin space plus a small bag. This is limited to the first 90 people who book that option. You can pay for a seat without that and you just have the small under seat bag. Since they limited it to 90 overhead bags per flight, that problem has gone away for the most part. It is usually selfish people putting their small bags up, when they don't have the right to, that causes problems.

However, this latest news story highlights a glaringly unfair scenario that's been allowed to continue for far too long. Passengers should not have to pay for reserving a 'standard' seat at all. Speedy boarding, more legroom, premium - fine. But you should not have to pay to sit next to a loved one."
