University Technology recently has become aware of a new scam in which fake invoices are being sent via PayPal. Individuals who regularly handle invoices as part of their job may be especially vulnerable to this scam.

Because the invoice appears to come from a well-known and reputable organization, you may believe the invoice is legitimate and pay up without thinking. Because the invoices are real PayPal invoices (albeit created fraudulently), once you click "Pay" your money will be automatically transferred via your PayPal account to the fraudster.

I have received 4 of these emails. I knew it was BS because I have NEVER opened a PayPal account, and I ignored each email, and deleted them. I have also gotten a bunch of offers from various vendors to get free high dollar retail items, which I never open, but delete after reporting SPAM. Knew right away this was a phishing scam as the number did not match the paypal customer service number. I called papypal and they cancelled the transaction. I then changed my password which is crazy because I have a password that is basically impossible to break.

The invoices for this scam may be generated in PayPal by the scammers, so while the purchase is fake, clicking on the links in the scam invoice may actually transfer payment via PayPal.
