I've been using an old copy of Finale 25 for a while. Just updated my computer to Windows 11, now Finale doesn't open. I'm definitely not updating to Finale 27, cause it's a bad program. I'm switching to musescore. But I have a lot of music that's still in the Finale file format, not converted to .xml. Is there a way to open these files in Musescore? Or some way you know of to convert these Finale files to .xml without using Finale? Otherwise this is gonna be a big pain in the butt :(

MuseScore always puts a controller, a clef and a key change message into the MIDI files.

I actually used Rosegarden to import those files, deleted the three entries from the MIDI file and re-exported the file from Rosegarden.

Those files play fine in Ardour.

Musescore is on sale and I have never used it but the idea of importing a classical score file into Cake has me intrigued. The projects I've been doing from scratch take me weeks to play in, and then weeks more to edit the controllers and tempo map.

i have only installed the free MS4 (which as a product is still a work in progress but sufficient for what i do - YMMV) from the musescore.ORG site. MS4 supports VSTi so you can use your instruments (like Kontakt etc) directly.

in general, i import / export MIDI to / from Musescore 4 for rendering the score, editing or creating a score, and exporting back to MIDI to bring into CW (or other apps like Toontracks EZ, Scaler, Synth V, etc for more edits, seeding, and / or rendering to audio in those products).

Thanks for the clarification of Glenn's comment for me, Byron. I think I get it.

The website says "View Official Scores licensed from print music publishers" and maybe I read more into that than it deserves.

As a workaround, users can manually download and install it from

It can be installed either system-wide at /usr/share/mscore-4.1/sound or at ~/XDG/Documents/MuseScore4 (or wherever your XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR points to).

Is there any way to completely clear all expressions from a file and start over, or manually change the position of them via the play window? Alternatively, is it a better approach to simply import midi files and then re-write all the dynamics?

I've looked at similar posts but none can seem to solve my problem. My laptop is 32 bit, the Linux is aarch64, the file is armhf. I've tried the same with both the 32 and 64 bit versions from musescore.org/download but nothing seems to work.

C:\Program Files\MuseScore 4\bin\MuseScore4.exe -h

Returns a large GUI window with a shorthand of what Musescore.org Handbook says:

Usage: MuseScore4.exe[options][scorefile...]

So, I'm confident my usage of MuseScore's command-line syntax is correct. The frustrating bit, is there's no error messages in the command-line. So, I don't know if MuseScore is passing errors silently or a version issue or something else. Aside from reading the MuseScore docs, and searching multiple channels under the StackExchange brand for related issue, to no avail in finding a solution.

MuseScore includes a set of sounds that reproduce common instruments (as defined by General MIDI) without taking up a lot of disk space or memory, but you can also substitute any SoundFont you prefer for a wider variety of sounds or for more realism.

MuseScore can import and export MIDI and MusicXML files, and it can also import from Capella and several other programs. MuseScore can export to PDF, PNG, and other graphic formats, to WAV and other audio formats, or to Lilypond for an alternative layout and print option.

Maintaining a modern, easy-to-navigate interface is essential in any program but especially one that needs to be accessible for everyone, from professional musicians, music teachers, and even students! With the release of MuseScore 4.0, the user experience is now better than ever before! This new version has incorporated not only a sleek visual interface but also light and dark modes, personalized accent colors, plus an updated high-contrast accessibility mode for better visibility. 2351a5e196
