The focus Brunning has on molecular structure through this book is very much in tune with my own research on molecular shape and behavior. Brunning takes us on a molecular tour of what we eat and drink, breaking down the structures of molecules and their reactions to explain why bacon tastes so good and brussel sprouts so awful, at least to those whose are genetically predisposed to tasting the bitter thiocyanates in the latter. He uses bold graphics to show what the molecules look like, giving us a taste of how chemists see the world. Tucked into each vignette is an easily digestible chemistry lesson, from what techniques are used to identify those smelly molecules in urine (gas chromatography) to the quantum mechanics behind why a gin and tonic will glow under a black light (the quinine in the tonic).

John McMurry's Organic Chemistry is renowned as the most clearly written book available for organic chemistry. In John McMurry's words, "I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words." In Organic Chemistry: A Tenth Edition from OpenStax, McMurry continues this tradition while updating scientific discoveries, highlighting new applications, scrutinizing every piece of art, and providing example problems to assist students. Organic Chemistry: A Tenth Edition continues to meet the scope and sequence of a two-semester organic chemistry course that follows a functional group approach. A highlighted list of changes along with a detailed table of contents and ancillary descriptions can be found on the Instructor and Student resources sections of this page. John McMurry decided to publish Organic Chemistry: A Tenth Edition under an open license as a tribute to his son, Peter McMurry, who passed away from cystic fibrosis in December 2019. Chemistry Techniques and Explorations (2023) by Dr. Daniel R. Albert is an eTextbook laboratory manual for first semester introductory chemistry courses. The manual includes two different types of experiments (Technique and Exploration) designed to engage students in chemistry laboratory practices. Technique laboratories are designed for students to learn and practice chemistry laboratory skills that are utilized in a wide variety of disciplines. Exploration laboratories provide freedom and time for students to use previously acquired skills toward answering a new application focused question. Exploration laboratories help build the scientific thinking skills necessary to approach novel problems. The goal of this lab manual is to build both fundamental techniques and problem-solving skills that aid students in becoming practicing scientists.

General Chemistry I Honors Laboratory Manual (2023) is an eTextbook designed to provide a practical, hands-on approach to learning chemistry for students taking General Chemistry I Honors courses. The manual covers fundamental principles of chemistry, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, and thermodynamics. The book is divided into chapters, each focusing on a specific topic. Each experiment in the manual is accompanied by step-by-step instructions, pre-lab questions, and post-lab questions, helping students to develop their analytical and problem-solving skills.

This publication was produced as a teaching tool for college chemistry. The book is a text for a computer-based unit on the chemistry of acid-base titrations, and is designed for use with FORTRAN or BASIC.computer systems, and with a programmable electronic calculator, in a variety of educational settings. The text attempts to present computer programs that are relatively free of reliance on specialized large computer systems programs. The case-study approach presented is highly research and laboratory oriented. Similar subject matter is conventionally taught in most introductory college chemistry courses, but this text material attempts greater depth of instruction through utilization of the computational resources of a computer.

An open textbook that is suitable for the first semester of Organic Chemistry. Basic concepts of the structures and reactivities of organic molecules are covered in this open textbook. Besides the fundamental discussions of organic acids-bases, stereochemistry, IR and NMR, this book also includes the topics of substitution and elimination reactions, radical substitution of alkanes, preparation and reactions of alkenes and alkynes.

This open online textbook on Environmental Toxicology aims at covering the field in its full width, including aspects of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, toxicology and risk assessment. With that, it will contribute to improving the quality, continuity and transparency of the education in environmental toxicology. We also want to make sure that fundamental insights on fate and effects of chemicals gained in the past are combined with recent approaches of effect assessment and molecular analysis of mechanisms causing toxicity.

Many textbooks seem to be dry and to only include what is necessary to get to the next grade level. Many decide to find out how to self-learn chemistry and find it to be an amazing journey. Here are some tips from Stanford University that might be useful.

In any case, even if your studying in high school or college, learning to learn by yourself is always a great skills to have. I would say that one of the most interesting skills I posses, and that made me succeed in may chemistry career is that I learn pretty fast by myself. And there is no other way around nurturing that skill than just picking up a book, and manage to learn about something without having to attend a course.

If your ultimate goal is to master the fundamentals of the chemistry field, this guide could be helpful. Chemistry is considered a fundamental science because it touches everything else to do with science.

If the goal is to find out how to self-study chemistry for high school, this book might be ideal. It tells you everything you should know about the subject and includes complex concepts that are easily understood.

IUPAC publishes books as output of the research done within its Project System as well as its activities related to nomenclature and terminology for the maintenance of a common language for the chemistry community. The latter appear in the IUPAC Color Book series.

Principles of Chemical Nomenclature: A Guide to IUPAC Recommendations, 2011 RSC [ISBN 978-1-84973-007-5]

This edition of Principles of Chemical Nomenclature was edited by G.J. Leigh. Like the first edition of 1998, it is directed towards teachers and students of chemistry in schools and universities, but it should be equally useful to people such as government officials concerned with customs and taxation who need some acquaintance with chemical names, but generally have little knowledge of chemistry. It is a valuable introduction to all other color books, Red, Blue, and Purple.

As I was reading Lessons in Chemistry, I kept thinking of Amazon Prime series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Both the book and the show feature outspoken central characters challenging the ingrained sexist structures of their era and their chosen fields (chemistry and stand-up comedy). They are easy to root for even when you may not agree with their actions. Even when they are acting in ways that seem self-sabotaging in the short term, they are doing the correct and principled thing. ff782bc1db
