CAD blocks are named groups of objects that act as a single 2D or 3D object. You can use them to create repeated content, such as drawing symbols, common components, and standard details. Blocks help you save time, maintain consistency, and reduce file size, since you can reuse and share content.

You can create your own CAD blocks or choose them pre-made in both AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT software. Insert a block into a CAD drawing either by specifying a drawing file or block definition within a drawing file. Then, you can easily move, copy, rotate, or scale it.

Dynamic blocks can save you time and decrease file size. Create one block that can change shape, size, or configuration depending on usage instead of inserting multiple static blocks. Add attributes or dynamic properties to CAD blocks, so they can accommodate different text strings, shapes, or sizes.

Dynamic blocks have flexibility and intelligence. You can easily change a dynamic block reference in a drawing while you work, manipulating the geometry through custom grips or properties. You can adjust the block reference in place. For example, instead of creating multiple blocks for different table types and chair settings, you can create one table block.

Hope you are well! I am in the process of creating new template for my organisation based on the old one passed to me by my predecessor! I am tidying up the existing template. I am trying to get rid off unwanted blocks and rename the existing ones. I have two blocks in there that I can't get rid off. I have deleted them but there is still one count of each in the template but not in the model or paperspace. They are driving me nuts! ! I have tried everything LAYDEL, PURGE, ... I added geometry in block editor to find them. They have embedded attributes. I tried getting rid of the attributes with various ways. I tried creating a new template file and bringing the paperspace layouts only however, those 2No unwanted blocks came in too. I only found in a blog that these AEC_MVBLOCK (multiview blocks something) are blocks created by Architectural Desktop application (which I am not familiar with).

I tried downloading Superpurge from Manusoft.com however, I need admin rights to be able to run it on my pc and our central IT is very unresponsive and reluctant at the moment. Does any of you have any ideas how I can get rid of them blocks with a lisp or another way? Your help is much appreciated!

Hope you are doing well! Apologies for delayed response. I was on annual leave last week! I have removed the company logos and licensing notes so I have uploaded the template if you are still interested in having a look. I have tried everything suggested including DWGCONVERT. I will try and install that Superpurge add in as well I just need to arrange it with our central IT! I also attached the screenshot highlighting the two blocks that I want to get rid off. They are Multiview Definition blocks. I have never heard of them before but I came across the term in another blog .. They are created by Architectural Desktop application (or something similar!)

And many thanks for your time. I will admit that I got a bit touchy with your first comment. I clearly re-added redefined the blocks (THAT I DELETED previously) so that people would help me troubleshoot. As you kindly did and thank you for that! I have managed to get rid of other blocks with purge in the dwt.

As mentioned before I inherited the dwts and decided to update them and add revision dynamic blocks, update disclaimers etc. I have been working as a CAD technician for years (never touched MEP) but have never configured a template. I am not a noob and I am not an expert either. Thus, certain things I wasn't aware of regarding dwt/dwg editing rights and many thanks for pointing them out to me. I will take them on board.

I opened it in AutoCAD MEP and exported to AutoCAD as you suggested. It might have been obvious to a lot of people here but I was genuinely confused as I have never configured templates before! I thought these blocks were created by another application! I don't use MEP either.

I have both of those options selected and it does not resolve my issue. These blocks are from third party vendors so sometimes they will have literally a hundred blocks within the one block I am trying to purge out. Very time consuming to go through them all and purge time after time.

You cannot purge blocks if they are used in your drawing, if you have one block containing other blocks in your drawing area then they are all considered to be used by AutoCAD. You might need to consider some other way of dealing with your blocks, posting a .dwg file with a detailed explanation of what you are trying to do would help see the problem (and a possible solution).

In this new drawing the function seems to be working fine. I purge the block and then it again asks if I would like to also purge the 11 nested blocks. For some reason on my main file I do not have this option....On my main file I would have to find these 11 blocks and re-purge them again.

It sounds like you do have one of these top-level blocks inserted somewhere in your drawing, it is a question of finding it? Maybe on a layout or on a layer that is frozen. Have you tried qselect to find the offending block

Copy and Paste the code to the command line and enter to display all those blocks selected. Using a saved filter should work as well, but the selection set will not display selected. Just start ERASE and Enter L (Last) at the "Select objects:" prompt, then Enter again.

I cannot look at your file right now - are the columns solid components in SketchUp? Components do become blocks in AutoCad exports, but a solid in SketchUp ought to transform into a solid in AutoCad, but the actual geometry would be inside a block.

I have been looking for a method to convert a range of AutoCAD blocks into a Cell library. Our library contains literally thousands of DWG files containing singular block definitions and I do not want to do it manually....I'm sure you can understand.

So when I got to this point I was quite excited...the whole process was relatively easy and I could scale it up to include all of the other blocks we have in DWG format. However, I thought I'd test placing the cell at this point...annoyingly the Cell origin is miles away from the cells themselves. So that brings me to where I am now...I have a cell library containing many cells that I cant use becasue the origins are incorrect.

Hi,

I opened a large AutoCAD file with several xrefs in Rhino. Strangely, several blocks seemed to change their scale noticeably. At first I thought it was something related to the blocks within the xref (the dark circles in the image below are axis notations in a xref, and are very evident), but then I saw that the grey rectangles were blocks in the drawing itself.

So in AutoCAD I made a drawing only with those blocks and then imported it to Rhino the same way I did the original. The result was as expected.

As these are axis and notation blocks it may not be a problem in this particular file, but this is happening with certain door block as well. The image below is more or less the same area in another drawing. The door is pretty much scale 1000 times

These last doors are blocks within other blocks within xref (which initially I thought was the problem) but then I found the example above that is a simple block in the AutoCAD drawing.

DWGmodels.com is a community of architects, designers, manufacturers, students and a useful CAD library of high-quality and unique DWG blocks. In our database, you can download AutoCAD drawings of furniture, cars, people, architectural elements, symbols for free and use them in the CAD designs of your projects!

Using the section of categories or the search form on this site, you will find the most popular AutoCAD blocks: furniture, people, machines, plants. Most of the CAD Blocks are made in different projections: top, side and back view.

There are 3 main elements in the drawing that are used when inserting blocks.

 1. Block definition.

You can import block definitions from an existing block in another drawing file. In addition, it is possible to develop block definitions from selected objects of a given drawing. A drawing template or its file consists of a non-graphic format in which data is stored.

 2. Block entry.

The graphic appears when you insert a block into a drawing from a block definition.

 3. Block insert tool.

These tools that are available in the program include: Block palette Gallery of blocks on tape, Tool Palettes window, Autodesk Control Center.

Use the Sheet Set Manager (dst) when starting a new sheet set. Standard and custom properties in Sheet Set Manager push the information into the fields created in the BES title blocks.

Luckily, creating a block on AutoCAD is neither hard nor time-consuming. This article will show you the steps to create a block in AutoCAD while working with a block editor. We also define dynamic blocks, which have advanced features to make the blocks easy to manipulate. We outline the steps and dive into each, so you can easily follow and practice them as you read on.

The simple block definition in AutoCAD is an entity or group of joined entities that work together as single 2D or 3D objects. It consists of lines, edges, and vertices drawn on a paper or model space. You can use the block replication function to save time when creating blocks that would appear several times across the drawing. Blocks also help you maintain consistency and reduce the file size of a drawing file.
