I hope some of you can help me. I got an old iPhone from my friend because mine is crashed. The issue is that on her phone, the home button does not work. She had an assistive touch, but after I restored iPhone, the assistive touch was no longer there and I can not get into the iPhone. Instructions on internet are fine but everything suppose that you can actually get into the phone and set the assistive touch in settings. My question is if I can set it through iTunes or whatever? I am lost.

When you first try to set up the iPhone w/o a working Home button you will be stuck. But if you power it off and try again you are able to get to the home screen and not go through the rest of the first-time setup. Then you can then up a virtual home button with the assistive touch.

You can add a home button using an accessibility feature called AssistiveTouch. However, the way you do it is slightly different depending on your iOS version, and we'll highlight the differences where they occur.

To use AssistiveTouch, tap the button that hovers on the screen. It should pop out into a button overlay menu with several buttons, including Home. Tapping Home has the same effect as pressing the home button on the phone.

You can customize this AssistiveTouch menu by adding, removing, or changing the buttons. If you delete all the buttons except one, the AssistiveTouch button can function as the home button with a single tap.

I had an iPhone 7 32GB which never did this and just upgrade to an iPhone 7 Plus 256GB that does do it. It freaked me out the first time it happened, thought I might have just pressed weird or something so didn't worry about it. Then it happened again the next day so started to analyze the situation. I would have to press the home button hundreds of times to duplicate the issue so it would be impossible to take it in for service. I actually did a hard reset on the device yesterday and has been perfect till about 20 minutes ago. Was in the car and it happened again. It's like I can feel a weird haptic vibration, like a short vibration haptic response, not the normal haptic for clicking the home button and I can hear it across the entire device like towards the top, it's a springy type noise... It's like it shorts out for a very brief period of time and then back to normal. Other than that, my phone functions just fine, and to be honest, I had 3 different iPhone 7's and found weird issues (but not this issue) with every single one. I'm probably the most OCD person in the world mind you. I was shocked others were having this problem, so, I'm guessing it's a weird hardware thing but a very very very small chance it will matter to the life of the device.

Just restored from recovery. Went to town on home button on 1 2 and 3 levels, no malfunctions. But, as I stated, I couldn't get it to do it on demand like you can. Mine was very very random. Going to leave it on level 1 moving forward and will update in two days if no malfunctions or before if anything else happens. System restore from recovery mode might be the ticket as it actually installs a fresh copy of IOS. Fingers crossed but have decided I won't spend any more time on this issue, even if it starts doing it again as it's just one of those things, nothing is perfect, not even Apple products. It will be a daily reminder that Jesus is the only perfect thing to rely on, I rejoice in any flaws I find in material things ? ? ?

I'm also having this problem where the home button makes a sharp springy sound. I'm debating on taking it to a service center because I cannot reproduce the sound as it is very random. However, i'm like super OCD about this and it annoys me to no end that there is a random occurrence of this sharp sound. Ugh.

No problems with the new one! Working perfect. Don't hear a spring sound either. My problem wasn't that at all. Now, you can hear the sound coming from the bottom speaker that sounds like the old button. To me, sounds exactly the way it should. No springy sound.

I have the exact same problem. I've soft reset my phone, hard reset it, and nothing has came to fix it. Sometimes when I click the home button, there's a haptic misfire. The vibration feels different and it sounds like a metal noise inside. It happens at random, sometimes multiple times in a row. I'm very OCD and this is a big problem to me. I know the phone shouldn't be making this noise. Has anyone contacted the apple store about it? I'm afraid that down the line this will lead to larger problems, but I will try to take it to the apple store as soon as I can.

Have had my 7 Plus for ~7 months. Just this week the home button behavior changed to the hollow, tinny response when pushed. I read this thread and did a soft restart. It seems to have fixed the issue, and so far the problem has not resurfaced. If you haven't tried that yet, it's a good first step.

Hi! I have the same problem. Almost the same problem. After i take the finger from home buton i can hear a noise in my speaker. Im not talking about the vibrating taptik thing. It is a noise in the speaker. It sounds like a click but it is not realy a click. This sound it was not present before 10.3.2 update. Could be something wrong in the update? My phone is new from the box. Today is the third day im using it.

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire. I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

That's what happened to me just right now. My iPhone 6s 64 GB was bought almost 6 months from now and it had no problems so far but lately I had a few minute issues, but nothing major. However today without any warning it just turned off and the home button was on fire. I tried the method you described and up and running right now. Thank you.

I had the same problem today. I can't tell you why it happened, but what fixed my phone was to hold the home button and the power button for about 10 seconds. The apple symbol popped-up and looked like a reboot. I plan to send an email to Apple Support as a follow-up, but hopefully that will get your phone back on for now.

Just had the same problem on 6s 64gb. Phone was working fine all day. Went to use the phone and it wouldn't power up, just a dark screen, and a very hot home button. I called Apple Support. They ran remote diagnostics and found nothing wrong. At their suggestion I held down the power button and the home button and the phone powered back on normally after about 10 seconds. I thought it might be an overheat due to the new case, but in researching overheat situations I saw that a triangular symbol should have popped up as a warning. The phone itself didn't feel hot, just the home button.

Hi, the same thing happened to me, left it plugged in for a few hours, went to check on it and it had turned itself off, wouldn't turn on , and the home button was red hot, I unplugged it and eventually after holding the power and home button it came back to life.... Didn't happen since... Very strange...

The home button is the biggest button on iOS devices and probably the most important one. It's a great example of what makes the iPhone and iPad so easy to use - that single button will always take you to the homescreen no matter what you're doing. On many Android devices, home is a software button that disappears inside apps, leaving you feeling stuck, but the physical home button on iOS devices is always there. At the same time, power users can double and triple tap the button for additional functions.

Unfortunately, this extensive usage means that the home button can become unresponsive. This can really make using the device frustrating, particularly if you're using an older device that doesn't support gestures. If you're facing the same problem, then you should enable the software home button option on your iOS device, and this is how you do it: 006ab0faaa
