Most micro SD cards come with an adaptor, which you can slot into a PC or laptop and transfer a copy of the files on the card across for safekeeping. You can also send footage directly from your dash cam to your phone or tablet using the Nextbase Cam Viewer app. Once you have downloaded your files, you then have a permanent copy of the footage stored securely on your PC, phone or tablet. However, there are also additional video file backup options available if you want to add another layer of protection.

One popular option is to upload your files to the cloud so that even if something happens to your PC or device, there will still be a copy available to view or share as needed. Many cloud providers such as Dropbox offer free storage, any file size can be uploaded easily, and the cloud video backup files can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. This substantially reduces the risk of losing your files due to the PC, laptop, tablet or phone where they are stored being lost or damaged. Sharing any file from a cloud location is also straightforward, with most cloud providers offering link-sharing services.

The Nextbase 422GW is pretty much plug-and-play. All you need is to insert the micro sd card, connect the camera to a power source and it begins to record automatically. I do suggest taking a few minutes to fix the settings. You can pick from different recording resolutions, 1080 at 60FPS, 1080P at 30FPS, 1440P at 30FPS. You can also choose whether or not you want it to record audio. There is also the setting to choose the video length of the clips. You have a choice of 1 minute, 2 minute, or 3-minute video recordings. The mount is super sturdy. As for the micro SD card you use with the dashcam, I suggest getting at least a 32GB U3 SD card. Nextbase has their own lineup of micro SD cards. They go up to 128GB of storage.

You can download the MyNextbase Connect app for more features. YOu can get MyNextbase Connect on Google Play (Android) and Apple App Store. Once you pair your phone to the app, you can update the dash cam firmware, connect it with the Amazon Alexa app, transfer files, and even get a live view of the dash camera through the phone. The Amazon Alexa assistant works with the bluetooth connection on your phone.

If you prefer a mount on your dash or windshield, this classy MagSafe mount from iOttie is a smart pick for folks with an iPhone 12 or later. It attaches to a dashboard pad or windshield with a suction cup that proved secure in my testing. The telescopic arm combines with a ball joint to give you a wide range of movement to find the ideal position. Sadly, it maxes out at 7.5 watts for charging, but I like that the USB-C charging cable is removable, so you can detach and stow it when your iPhone is topped up. There is also a built-in fan to help keep the temperature down when the sun is out.

Vantrue Element 1 Dash Cam for $150: This dinky dashcam from Vantrue records crisp video at up to 1,440p and 30 frames per second with support for HDR. It also has a park mode and built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, but I could not get the app to connect, so I had to remove the microSD card to review the footage.

The best dash cams can have anything from one, two or even three cameras. Single camera dash cams record the outside view from your windscreen, dual dash cams add an inside facing camera which is especially useful for ride-share drivers like taxis, while three-camera dash cams are more for professional drivers clocking up the miles, adding an additional viewpoint from the outside of the vehicle, being especially handy for trucks.

Video resolution is a key consideration when choosing a dash cam, as explained below. Most dash cams in 2023 can record footage in Full HD, which is generally enough to identify large details in a video clip. Sharper 4K dash cams tend to cost more, but capture video at a higher resolution. This makes it easier to pull out crucial details such as number plates, which mean 4K dash cams generally offer more reassurance from a safety perspective.

The overall experience installing, getting started and ease of use on the go varies wildly from dash cam to dash cam. For the most part, dash cams mount somewhere along a car's front windscreen or windshield. Of course, wherever you place your dash cam must not block your view of the road.

To stop important clips from being overwritten, many of the best dash cams can automatically detect potential incidents and flag the relevant footage to protect it from deletion. Most models with loop recording also allow you to manually tag clips with the same effect, generally by way of a shortcut button on the body of the dash cam.

Before choosing which dash cams to test, we spent hours researching the specs and features of about 380 models. We read reviews from Autoblog, BlackBoxMyCar, CNET, Digital Trends, PCMag, Popular Mechanics, T3, and TechRadar (though many of them were thin on hands-on experience), as well as customer reviews and ratings (after we checked their reliability on Fakespot). We also perused some driving legislation and insurance claims, and we watched hours of dash-cam footage on YouTube.

Just got pre-owned Yaris Cross Hybrid 21 reg with installed Nextbase 380GWX dash cam. Having difficulty getting it to conect to Samsung phone. Tried following the Nextbase instructions and down loaded the Cam Viewer app. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

^Hi Red Toyota. Tried what you advised and got a connection between the dash cam and phone app. But it seems that when I turn the engine off the connection drops out and I have to go through the procedure to re establish connection. Is this normal? Also I didn't get asked to put in the password for the WiFi. Any suggestions to put me on the right track please. Thanks. Bob81

The dealer fitted dash cams should come with an internal battery backup for parking mode, in case someone hits you while car is parked. These cannot power the cam for connecting the app. Replacement packs are available from Nextbase.

I have just bought a new Mazda 2 which has Apple car play installed as standard. It is connected to my iPhone max 13 and works perfectly. Three days ago Mazda installed a Nextbase dash cam the 380 GWX model. It is impossible to connect to my iPhone as it should. The app I have installed is Cam Viewer. Every time I manage to connect the dash cam to the phone the connection is over ridden within about ten seconds by the Mazda Apple car play link, so you do not get enough time to connect the dash cam and phone and you consequently can't view any recordings. I have made five calls to Nextbase and been unable to resolve the issue, a return visit to Mazda and two calls to their tech dept all to no avail, the latest suggestion is that the app might be incompatible with Apple car play, but I have no idea how to check that out. If I don't get this resolved within a day or two I shall have to get the sat nav removed and a refund as "Not fit for purpose" but having been the subject of a hit and run recently I really do want a dash cam. Any ideas?

Thank you for your reply, yes I did realise there were two apps, each app is specific to a particular range of camera, so I had already checked that I was using the correct app. I have had no joy with Nextbase, I have spent ages on the phone to them over five calls and received no useful information at all. After posting this message I phoned an Audi garage, because they also have Apple CarPlay in their cars, a technician was very helpful and tells me he thinks the problem lies with the app itself. Interestingly there are no reviews for the app in the App Store but having spent a lot of time searching the internet I have found numerous people also complaining about the compatibility between the camera and the app, so I am beginning to suspect that it is the app that is the problem. I have ordered an Apple SD card reader and think the only solution will be to remove the SD card in the event of an accident and view the recording using the SD card reader and my laptop. A bit of a nuisance because one of the main selling points of these dash cams is the ease with which you can view the recordings through the app on your phone. It appears that nothing is ever as straightforward as the promotional material implies! 006ab0faaa
