I have an iphone 4s running ios 9.2. For several weeks I've not been able to backup to the icloud. I went through some procedures I found online, including deleting existing backup, turning icloud off, resetting wifi, resetting phone, turning icloud back on.

Now, icloud won't turn back on. I keep getting: "icloud backup failed", "There was a problem enabling icloud backup". Get this message every time I try again. I have a 62GB phone with 200GB or icloud storage purchased (199GB available since I deleted the backup).

I have the same issue, started this week. I deleted all my previous backups, have plenty of storage for a backup, when i turn on backup I get "iCloud Backup Failed, there was a problem enabling iCloud backup". Tried resetting network settings, nothing will allow me to turn on my backup.

Thanks for replying and letting us know that these steps did not help you resolve this issue. To move forward, I would suggest contacting AppleCare directly. Contacting Apple Support will allow us to look deeper into your situation and provide the best possible support.

I spent this last Saturday discussing with Apple Support over IM for two hours, but to no avail. It was a very painful experience. Finally the rep said that he is going to escalate it internally, as it sounds like an iOS (software) problem. The intermediary solution he offered me was to back it up via iTunes on my computer constantly 'til Apple resolves the issue. No time frame was given yet!

Not looking forward to deleting, uninstalling, reinstalling and re-configuring just to find out it's a problem that has to be solved internally by Apple. So far, all my attempts at those resolutions have not worked. If anyone reading this has this problem, or has had this problem, and resolves it, PLEASE remember to post the resolution here. Thanks!

I Have contacted Apple support twice this evening about this issue. I was finally told after doing all of the steps set out below that it's a known issue and the engineers are looking into it. I have the same issue with both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. Both used to backup fine until Friday night 22nd Jan.

Hi,

Please advice the need for 1password to have its own in-app backup since backup is already enabled by default in iCloud backups.

If I disable the iCloud backup in iCloud's settings and just enable the in-app backup, will I be able to restore all my passwords if I get a new device by using restore from iCloud. Thanks.

We've found iCloud's backup system does not reliably back up and restore 1Password data. The best way to avoid a difficulty is to use a 1Password.com subscription account. That way whenever you get a new device you simply login to your 1Password account and all of your data is accessible.

I know you have the 1password account available for subscription. I hope that you can be impartial to both subscribed and non subscribed users. You did not answer my question at all.

Please allow me to ask you again.

If I disable 1password backup in the settings of the backup of iOS to iCloud and just have the in-app backup to iCloud enabled, will I be able to restore my passwords to a new device using iCloud restore. Thanks.

We definitely strongly feel a 1Password account provides the best experience. So in that regard we are not and cannot be impartial, no. But of course we'll still try to help folks who opt to use 1Password standalone.

I believe I misunderstood your question, at least in part, and I also believe it is due to a difference in terminology. Please bear with me a moment. A backup is different than sync. If you are using the standalone version of 1Password (no subscription) and want a backup then you'll need to follow the guide I linked above. If you want to sync your 1Password data, such that the encrypted data is stored with iCloud and kept up to date on multiple devices, you can set up syncing with iCloud:

Sorry if it feels like we're discussing semantics a bit here but it is actually an important distinction. Sync doesn't protect you if, for example, you accidentally delete an item. A backup does. But either can potentially protect against losing data if a device is replaced (due to loss, damage, an upgrade, or whatever other reason). Ultimately if using the standalone product our recommendation would be to take advantage of both backups and sync.

Do I need to waste iCloud space with an iPhone backup when I'm already using iCloud for Photos and Notes? And every other one of my apps is separately saved in the cloud. I use LastPass for passwords and it's separately on their cloud. I use different non-apple mail exchanges for Calendar and email. I have my contacts on my Google account. All the other random apps have their own data saved on the cloud (Facebook, Intuit, Waze, etc.).

I'm still lost on what exactly is getting backed up? All the settings like turning on/off location services, tracking across apps, etc.? Because I just redid all those on my new Iphone 14 although I don't think I restored a backup because, as I mentioned in my original post, I wanted a fresh start. Still took me about an hour or two to get all setup again. Then the fun part was having a clean pallette for home screen and widget setups and I just downloaded apps from the app store on an as needed basis.

So I have a lot of users who have iPads and iPhones as we deploy new ones to them we are trying to enroll them in JAMF with DEP enrollment the problem is many of them have iCloud backups that I cant tell them they cant use. From what I read doing iCloud restore to a DEP enrolled phone will loose the supervision. So my questions is how are you all handling this issue?

The problem I have is I need to deploy DEP devices to people who want all their data from an old unsupervised device. Logging back into iCloud will pull down pictures and I can probably convince people they need to install apps by hand but Is there anyway to get messages to the new phone?

If you're restoring a backup from an old, unsupervised device to a new DEP-enrolled device, everything will work out well. Your users will get to restore their backups, and you'll have devices enrolled as supervised.

@rambro so it sounds like you are giving the users entirely new devices. If that's the case, you should be ok. The Supervision will apply to the new devices and the users won't be able to remove it. They can restore their backup from their old, previously unsupervised device, and the new device will remain supervised. The only problem would be if you enrolled their old device in DEP and they then restored the old, unsupervised backup to that same device.

I'm in the process of migrating supervised devices from AirWatch to Jamf. I took an iCloud backup of a supervised device in AirWatch, then reset it and changed DEP to point the device to Jamf. The setup assistant prompted me to restore from backup before the Remote Management/DEP prompt. I did the restore, and the device restored all settings then immediately went to the home screen after restart. It completely bypassed the remote management/DEP prompt and all other setup assistance screens. I checked Settings -->General and found that there were no profiles installed: none for AirWatch, and none for Jamf.

My uneducated guess of what happened is that the AirWatch profiles were captured in backup but could not be put back in place because DEP now assigned the device to Jamf. The Jamf profiles were not installed because applying a backup skips the setup assistant.

If you regularly sync with AnkiWeb, then your media will be backed up to AnkiWeb when you sync. You can also check preferences>backups inside AnkiMobile, and delete some of your older automatic backups if you wish to free a bit more space.

We restored the backup on another iPad then reinstalled the Acrobat Reader app but this did not bring back the files. Using a third party tool we were able to see that there is 1GB of Acrobat data stored in that particular backup.

I've been using Evernote for a number of years on my desktop PC, iPad and iPhone. I've just noticed the the iCloud backup file size for Evernote on the iPad is 1.5GB, whereas it is only 700 MB on the iPhone. Can anyone explain why there is such a discrepancy in the file sizes.

Do I need to use the iCloud backup service if all the data is stored on the Evernote servers? Surely if I have to reinstall Evernote on one of my devices then it will automatically sync will the data stored centrally by Evernote?

Hi - your phone doesn't download all your notes unless you specifically set a notebook up for Offline Searching; so what it's got is an index and some snippet thumbnails, and maybe some cached notes; but not the whole enchilada. If your desktop has more, there's probably a good reason for that, and it includes a full and complete copy of your whole database, plus any Local (unsynced) Notebooks that you might have created. 152ee80cbc
