Registered Aadhaar card holders can visit the UIDAI website and download their respective masked cards. People can use Aadhaar number, enrolment ID (EID) and Virtual ID (VID) to download a masked Aadhaar card.

Earlier on Sunday, UIDAI issued a statement advising people not to share their Aadhaar cards with anyone as they can be misused. After the statement was misunderstood, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) later issued another official statement to withdraw the statement. "It is learnt that it was issued by them in the context of an attempt to misuse a photoshopped Aadhaar card. The release advised the people to not to share photocopy of their Aadhaar with any organization because it can be misused. Alternatively, a masked Aadhaar which displays only the last 4 digits of Aadhaar number, can be used," Meity noted in the release.

Aadhaar is one of several valid identity and address proofs that you can use to carry out certain financial transactions or complete your KYC. But, with a surge in online fraud, it is critical that you protect your data and identity, and only share what is absolutely necessary. A masked Aadhaar hides the first 8 digits of your Aadhaar card, and enhances the security of your identity.

Your Aadhaar is proof of your unique identity and contains important personal information, which if compromised, can expose you to fraud, digital identity theft, and other threats. The masked Aadhaar card option, as the name suggests, allows you to conceal your Aadhaar number and keeps your personal information safe.

Physical copies of the Aadhaar card, as well as e-Aadhaar, masked Aadhaar, and offline electronic xml provided by UIDAI (if voluntarily offered by the client) can be accepted as officially valid documents for KYC purposes, according to a circular issued by UIDAI on October 23, 2018, based on the opinion of the learned Attorney General of India.

The press information bureau withdrew the warning two days after issuing it, saying the release was published in the context of an attempt to misuse an edited Aadhaar card, and was being withdrawn "in view of the possibility of the misinterpretation."The new statement said the Aadhaar ecosystem had adequate features to protect the identity and privacy of users, and that users are only advised to exercise "normal prudence".The earlier announcement had advised people not to share photocopies of their Aadhaar with any organisation because it could be misused. "Unlicensed private entities like hotels or film halls are not permitted to collect or keep copies of Aadhaar card," it said. Alternatively, a masked Aadhaar which displays only the last 4 digits of the biometric ID can be used for the purpose, it had added. The warning triggered alarm on social media as screengrabs of the press release and news articles went viral, with the issue among the top 10 trending topics in India on Twitter on Sunday. The Unique Identification Authority of India says among its frequently asked questions: "It is near impossible to impersonate you if you use Aadhar to prove your identity."

While the Aadhaar card can be downloaded with full details easily from the Aadhaar website or with the help of the app, recently the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) issued a statement when it advised people to use a masked Aadhaar card which displays only the last 4 digits of Aadhaar number to be used as the full 12 digits can be misused by other parties. In some cases, instead of sharing the Aadhaar card copy via mail or WhatsApp with the full 12 digits, you can alternatively use the masked Aadhaar copy.

Enrollment ID will be provided once to have applied for an Aadhaar card or given new details to be updated on your existing Aadhaar card. This will be provided after you have successfully completed the new enrollment or update process.

The EID will be on the top of your enrolment/acknowledgement slip. It is a 28 digit number with 14 digit enrolment number (Eg: 1234/12345/12345) and the 14 digit date and time (yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss) of enrolment. These 28 digits together form your EID. Here is how you can download a masked Aadhaar card using EID.

There is no limit on how many times you can download the regular or masked Aadhaar card, but it is always best to have a copy available for quick usage as sometimes, there might be some server issues.

Once you have downloaded the masked Aadhaar card file, you will have to enter an 8 character password. This password will be a combination of the first four letters of your name (as in Aadhaar) in UPPER/CAPITAL letters and Year of Birth in YYYY format.

The e-Aadhaar card password is typically a security feature that helps in protecting your personal information in the digital version of the Aadhaar card. You can simply download your Aadhaar card online but to open this PDF format, it is imperative to provide an Aadhaar card password.

UIDAI keeps your e-Aadhaar file secured in a password-protected PDF. It is a security measure implemented to safeguard the privacy of your personal information. This may include your name, address and biometric information. As this PDF document is available online, making it more prone to hacking, an e-Aadhaar password is necessary. In the event, that you lose your physical Aadhaar, or mistakenly destroyed it, you can download the card online and view it by inserting the Aadhaar card password. In this manner, no one except you could access or view it without the password.

A masked Aadhaar is a more secure version of the card where the 12-digit number is encrypted. In a masked Aadhaar, the first 8 numbers are replaced with 'X's, and the last four digits of your Aadhaar number are visible (i.e., XXXX XXXX 1234).

Note that your regular Aadhaar is just as secure as a masked Aadhaar. Neither UIDAI nor your bank can misuse your Aadhaar details. Your mobile number and biometric data are linked to the card, which means no one can use it to access any private or financial information.

Note that the masked Aadhar is password protected and its password is first 4 letter of your name and the last 4 digits is your birth year. And the aadhar card registered mobile number is mandatory to download masked aadhar online via UIDAI site.

Talking about the masked Aadhar acceptability or validity, it is digitally signed by UIDAI in the same way as the regular e-Aadhar. So, the masked Aadhar is a valid document which is accepted wherever the normal Adhar card is accepted. However, there may be some cases where the masked Aadhar will not be valid like for some banking purposes, passport etc.

The password of the masked Aadhar is 8 letters consisting of the first 4 capital letters of your name printed on the Aadhar card and the last 4 characters is your birth year. For example, if your name is Tony Stark and your DOB is 1 January 1998 then the password is TONY1998.

Aadhar card registered mobile is compulsory for downloading your masked Aadhar online because OTP verification is needed for this. So, you cannot download masked Aadhar without a registered mobile number.

There is one difference between the masked Aadhar and the regular e Aadhar is that in the masked Aadhar card, the first 8-digit UID number printed on it is hidden with a cross mark on it and the rest 4 digits are visible.

The Aadhaar card is one of the mandatory KYC documents required for receiving government subsidies and benefits. It is also required in order to open a bank account. However, Aadhaar cardholders are also falling prey to online fraud while completing KYC, etc. Therefore, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) introduced 'Masked Aadhaar' as a safety measure for Aadhaar cardholders.

Using this masked Aadhaar card ID issued by UIDAI, only the last 4 digits of an individual's Aadhaar card are visible. In the masked Aadhaar card ID, the first 8 base numbers of the Aadhaar card are written as 'XXXX-XXXX'. Therefore, a person's Aadhaar card number becomes invisible to strangers, which prevents Aadhaar cards from being misused.

It is to be noted that a masked Aadhaar card works as proof of identity and is acceptable while travelling, booking tickets, etc. It is important to note that a masked Aadhaar card cannot be quoted to avail government schemes and services. To avail of government schemes and related services, a user is required to submit his/her regular Aadhaar card.

The need for government-issued documents is quite extensive and the most common of them is meeting the KYC requirements of various public and private organizations. For such KYC requirements or verifications, we often provide our PAN Card or Aadhaar Card without any second thought. We often hear about the misuse of such documents but never suspect it to happen to us. This is one of our biggest mistakes as there have been many documented cases where the photocopy of the Aadhaar card has been gravely misused and the cardholder is left to face the consequences of the same. To resolve these issues, the Aadhaar issuing authority has urged the Aadhaar cardholders to use masked Aadhaar.

The masked Aadhaar can be used by cardholders as a form to meet the basic KYC requirements for various purposes like registering for mobile applications or private organizations or public organizations that do not need the complete Aadhaar Number. As per the regulations of the UIDAI, only verified and licensed entities under UIDAI are allowed to collect and permitted to store the Aadhaar Card details of a person.

As mentioned above, masked Aadhaar is the digital copy of the e-Aadhaar that is digitally signed by a competent authority of UIDAI. Such copy is equally valid and authentic as the physical Aadhaar card. This makes it authentic and at the same time prevents its misuse if they fall in the wrong hands. As per UIDAI, masked Aadhaar can be downloaded from the UIDAI website legally by selecting the masked Aadhar option at the time of downloading. When such masked Aadhar is shared with any third party, they will be able to see only the last four digits of the Aadhaar. e24fc04721
