Hover Skirt is an arcade, running game that challenges a player to help a female runner cross gaps between platforms and multiplier islands using her skirt like an umbrella to float through the air. The runner receives a base haircut, top and skirt. The player upgrades these areas after they collect enough gemstones on the track to pay to randomly unlock styles that become available after a certain number of successful runs.

The player's primary objectives are to collect skirts and gemstones. They can also collect haircuts, tops and keys. The game provides them with an option to watch an advertisement to receive a random bonus at the start of each run, such as unlimited flight, a longer skirt or a magnet that attracts gemstones.

Skirt length matters because a long skirt provides more hover time. Each flight destroys sections of a skirt. With a longer skirt, the player can direct the runner across gaps to reach more skirts and gemstones. Additionally, saw blades, lava and other threats destroy pieces of a skirt. This Instructable will show you how to build a hovor craft using any leaf blower (gas or electric) or shop vacuum. I built this with my kids in less than an hour using scrap wood and hardware I had on hand. My kids and I built this after creating small balloon hover crafts for their science fair. I wanted to show them the real thing...or I had always wanted to do this once my father-in-law gave us a leaf blower;) Thanks Joe!

Flip the plywood and leaf blower over so the underside is revealed to mount the tarp/plastic skirt.Procure a thin piece of metal which can be the bottom of a coffee can or other scrap steel.Drill 4-8 holes in the metal so a wood screw can fit through but the head of the screw can't. For typical screws, a 3/16" screw would be perfect.Place the tarp over the plywood and center it the best you can. Place the steel plate over the center of the board and screw through the metal plate, through the tarp and into the plywood platform. Use the 5" x 5" piece of plywood and place that on the top side of the plywood so that when the screws break through the plywood, they go into the small plywood part so no screws are exposed.

Draw a line around the top of the plywood, 3 inches in from the edge.Fold over the tarp and use the staple gun to staple the skirt down at this line. This will make the skirt extra baggy since we cut it at a 8" distance but only fold it in at 3". the difference between these measurements will give us 3-4" of height once we turn on the hover craft.Once the skirt is stapled all the way around, place the picture-frame plywood over the edge and using 20 or more 1.25" screws, screw down the picture frame to clamp the skirt tightly. This clamping will ensure a good air seal.

Flip over the hover craft and cut six, 2" diameter vent holes in the tarp around the steel plate.The vent holes are how the air escapes from the skirt and ensures the air escapes in a way that keeps the craft hovering uniformly.

Having done background research on the feasibility of various skirt designs, a well balanced decision on which foundational design to follow; bag, finger or a mix of both was made. Although it was recognised that the finger skirt would be a strong design and the mix being even more so as evidenced by its widespread use in full scale craft, the decision was made to operate a bag skirt for its ease of design and manufacture.

Although the hover aspect was lower on importance it still had to function efficiently. So the question was left, was it going to be able to hover? By researching RC hovercraft and looking at previous Strathclyde University designs it became clear that a bag skirt would be sufficient of the task.

This shape consists of two radii where by the larger radius is in the inside. These 2 radii can be calculated by multiplying by a multiplication factor of the inner radius/outer radius. This depends on the pressure ratio in our hover skirt. The choice of pressure differential is based upon the degree of stability required. The higher the ratio the greater the stability, but at the expense of undulating surface performance and higher skirt wear on uneven terrain. A factor of 2.66 was chosen because it was an average taken between a higher and lower factor.

The outer diameter= the height of inflated skirt. Therefore we could choose a desired diameter of 3cm. The terrain to be travelled across was assumed to be fairly smooth as it would either be, water, grass, or a smooth road therefore it would be possible to get away with this fairly small height.

The skirt material needed to maintain the target weight on the Hoverwing but also provide enough strength to prevent ripping. Rip-stop nylon fabric offered many advantages: it is lightweight, water-resistant, fire-resistant and windproof. This nylon is fabricated with a double thread woven into a crosshatch pattern, a series of parallel lines that cross approximately every quarter inch, so the fabric resists tearing and ripping. This was the material chosen.

Manufacturing was carried out, first by measuring out the skirt material and drawing on the dimensions with a pencil. This was then cut out by a scalpel which gave us 4 separate pieces of material. The outside edge of the skirt was glued in first before the inside edge of the skirt.tag_hash_110

To make the most efficient skirt shape we measured in from the edge of the hull 6cm where the edge of the skirt was to be attached then to make the desired shape a strip of wood was sanded to provide the desired angle then glued in.
