Christina Filossaint
Christina Filossaint is the recipient of the PDK International Dr. Billie P. Spellman Scholarship for Graduate Studies at the University of Houston. This scholarship will help her to become an educational diagnostician. In her narrative, she wrote:
"Growing up as a child of Haitian immigrants, the importance of education and giving back to my community was instilled in me from a very young age. Despite my parents facing language barriers, financial constraints, and the lack of education, they understood that education can unlock many doors for me. Witnessing my sibling with a learning disability navigate the disparities that lie within the system, ignited a passion in me to pursue a career in Education.
As a dedicated educator with experience as a General Education and Special Education Teacher, continuously working in education with students has been extremely rewarding. Currently, I’m pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education with an Education Diagnostician emphasis at the University of Houston. My short term goal is to become a certified Educational Diagnostician which will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and support students with a learning disability. This is particularly important to me because I want to become an expert in this field, so that I can provide the highest level of advocacy and support. Although I love working with students, my career aspirations extend beyond individual student support. Receiving more education is vital to be because I plan on driving systemic changes in the Special Education system. I aspire to work alongside educators, families, and communities to make positive, systemic changes. For example, I would like to make an impact on the professional development opportunities teachers have access to, intentionally engaging families, and increasing cultural competence amongst all stakeholders in the Special Education community. After gaining a copious amount of experience in the field, I would love to open a non-profit organization where I work with families who have a child with a disability. In particular, I am passionate about helping students learn how to read as low literacy rates are threatening to our communities. Ultimately, my career trajectory will continue to be centered around advocating and working alongside students and families.”
Cynthia Pena Sarrat
Cynthia Pena Sarrat has been awarded the PDK Houston Area Scholarship, which will support her journey to become a certified teacher. In her narrative, she wrote:
"I am writing to express my heartfelt desire and motivation to pursue a career as an education teacher. Teaching has always been a secret desire. During COVID, I witnessed first-hand the power of teachers when both children were schooled via remote instruction. That experience led me to rethink how I could make a difference in the field of education. I know there is a teaching shortage, and kids need people that are genuinely interested in helping them grow academically and personally. I made the decision then to switch professions and I am now pursuing a certification in education.
I have found that my background and life experiences have been useful for students. It brings real life to the classroom. My teachers had a profound impact on my academic studies from an early age, and I wish to do the same for students. In today’s information age. In my academic studies, my teachers provided guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support. That is the type of teacher I want to be. I have a profound appreciation for the impact that teachers can have on the lives of their students, and I am excited to embark on this journey to make a positive difference in the lives of others through teaching. I am also inspired to not only impart knowledge but also to nurture curiosity, foster critical thinking, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning in students. I am deeply passionate about creating inclusive and engaging learning environments where every student feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. In today's rapidly evolving world, the role of educators has never been more vital. I believe in empowering all students, regardless of their background or abilities, to thrive academically and personally. I believe that education has the power to transform lives and I am eager to be a part of that transformative process. In conclusion, my decision to pursue a career as an education teacher is driven by a deep-seated passion for learning, a commitment to student success, and a belief in the profound impact that educators can have on shaping the future. I am excited about the opportunity to embark on this rewarding journey and make a meaningful difference in the lives of students.”

TheHouston Area Chapter of PDK proudly recognizes Sheila Whitford for her inspiring leadership in advancing literacy and community connection through the Little Library Initiative. Originally launched by volunteers at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston, this project has blossomed into a community-wide effort to bring books and learning opportunities to neighborhoods across Houston.
Together with church members Joe Lach, Michael Morrison, and Joan Waddill, Sheila has been instrumental in fundraising, building, and organizing book collections for the Little Libraries. Their dedication inspired a Dad and Family Little Library Construction Team—led by Jose and Jessica Elias—to expand the initiative in the Denver Harbor area.

Thanks to Sheila’s continued commitment, this initiative is helping foster a love of reading and strengthening community bonds one library at a time.

On September 4, 2025, the PDK Houston Area Chapter visited La Promesa High School in Aldine ISD to spend an afternoon with the school’s Educators Rising chapter. From the moment we stepped onto campus, the energy was contagious—students filled the room with curiosity, big dreams, and pride in their school community.
La Promesa is more than a school—it’s a family. Students shared how their teachers feel like a second home, always ready to lift them up. One student said, “Through their support, I learned how to trust myself and believe in my potential.” That sense of belonging and encouragement fuels their confidence to pursue careers in education.
This year, La Promesa students showed the world what they’re capable of. At the 2025 Educators Rising National Conference in Orlando, Florida, they didn’t just participate—they shined. Students walked away with multiple competition and contest awards, proving that their hard work, teamwork, and dedication truly pay off. Their success has inspired even more students to join in, with 35 ready to compete this year.
During our visit, students got to learn more about PDK International and the many opportunities available through Educators Rising and beyond. They discovered scholarships, career pathways, and the importance of connecting with mentors who can guide them along the way. The message was clear: your future is wide open, and you have people ready to support you every step of the journey.
The afternoon was sprinkled with words that stuck with students long after the meeting ended. The overarching message from Houston Area PDK leaders was through mentorship, self-belief, and community, the path to becoming educators is wide open. These reminders left students feeling motivated and empowered to chase their goals in education and beyond.
With national wins under their belt, supportive teachers by their side, and new connections through PDK, La Promesa’s Educators Rising students are ready for whatever comes next. Their passion and determination prove that the future of education is in great hands.

Faculty and student leaders expressed enthusiasm for expanding opportunities for mentorship, collaborative programming, and increased participation in Educators Rising and Phi Lambda Theta initiatives. Joining the Houston chapter also provides TSU members with access to scholarships, travel opportunities, and professional development experiences that connect them to a broader community of educators across Houston and beyond.

By stepping into this shared chapter space, TSU is taking an important step toward strengthening its ties to the educator pipeline and amplifying the voice of its students and faculty within the larger conversation about teaching and learning.
Together, we are igniting new possibilities for educators!

The necessity for leaders to undergo personal evolution to inspire meaningful change
Simple, actionable steps to elevate human energy within an organization and create a joyful, thriving workplace

As part of the facilitating team for the Strategic Sessions, he worked alongside his peers to develop practical strategies addressing a spectrum of critical issues. From education and fiscal policies to climate justice and migration, their collective efforts transcended boundaries, guided by a shared commitment to justice and tangible impact.
Throughout the week, John immersed himself in a myriad of activities, from fine-tuning survey instruments to brainstorming policy initiatives. Yet, amidst the strategic planning, what resonated most deeply were the connections forged with individuals from diverse backgrounds. These relationships, grounded in mutual purpose, served as the cornerstone of their collaborative endeavor for positive change.
As John bids farewell to Geneva, his heart brims with gratitude for the collaborative spirit that infused every aspect of the forum. He extends his sincerest appreciation to his fellow working group members, the dedicated contributors to the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD), and all who contributed to this enriching experience.
About the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent
On 2 August 2021, the General Assembly adopted its resolution 75/314, in which it formally operationalized the Permanent Forum as "a consultative mechanism for people of African descent and other relevant stakeholders as a platform for improving the safety and quality of life and livelihoods of people of African descent, as well as an advisory body to the Human Rights Council, in line with the programme of activities for the implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent and in close coordination with existing mechanisms".
We are thrilled to announce two new updates to the PDK Houston Area Chapter 0074 Board of Officers. Dr. Cathy Horn has assumed the role of Advisor, bringing her wealth of expertise and passion for education to our team. Additionally, we welcome Dr. Holli Forrest as our new Vice President of Programming, whose innovative ideas and dedication will undoubtedly enrich our chapter's initiatives. Their leadership will undoubtedly steer us towards even greater success in promoting excellence in education within our community.
January 2024 marked a significant moment for the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) as Dean of College of Education Dr. Stacey Edmonson and PDK Houston Area Chapter President Dr. Patricia Williams came together for a two-hour lunch that was nothing short of productive and inspiring.
The focus of their discussion centered around the revitalization of the SHSU PDK chapter, and Dr. Edmonson's enthusiasm for the project was clearly evident. During the meeting, she expressed her commitment to the cause and noted that Dr. Abbie Strunc, the recently appointed chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning at SHSU, shared a similar passion for PDK. According to Dr. Edmonson, Dr. Strunc "loves PDK," adding a promising dimension to the university's involvement with the educational organization.
One exciting prospect discussed during the lunch was the participation of an SHSU team in the upcoming 2024 Educators Rising Conference. Drawing from her own experience attending the conference several years ago, Edmonson highlighted the value and impact such events can have on future educators. This decision aligns with the broader vision of reinvigorating the SHSU PDK chapter and fostering a sense of community among its members.
One notable decision that emerged from the meeting was the choice not to merge the Houston Area and SHSU PDK chapters at this time. Instead, a collaborative approach will be taken, where SHSU PDK members will be invited to participate in all Houston Area Chapter activities. To cater specifically to the SHSU chapter, a slate of officers will be elected, ensuring a dedicated team is in place to organize activities tailored to the university's needs.
Dean Edmonson and Dr. Williams demonstrated a shared commitment to strengthening the ties between SHSU and PDK, recognizing the unique opportunities this collaboration could bring to the university's aspiring educators. As plans take shape for the revitalized SHSU PDK chapter, the prospect of increased engagement, professional development, and networking opportunities is undoubtedly on the horizon. The lunch meeting stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in enhancing educational experiences for future leaders in the field.
In a bid to continue fostering collaboration and invigorating the educational community, the President of the PDK Houston Area Chapter, Dr. Patricia Williams, along with its Treasurer, Lidia G. Zatopek, traveled to Huntsville on February 21, 2024 where they met with Sam Houston State University School of Teaching and Learning Department Chair and Associate Professor Dr. Abbie Strunc.
The discussion revolved around strategies to reignite SHSU chapter's momentum. The meeting delved into various aspects, ranging from structuring the board of officers to establishing robust financial mechanisms.
Dr. Williams underscored the importance of collaboration and synergy between the Houston Area Chapter and SHSU. She emphasized the significance of inclusivity, stating that SHSU PDK members would be warmly welcomed to participate in all Houston Area activities. This gesture aims to foster a sense of belonging and encourage a vibrant exchange of ideas among educators across different platforms.
Moreover, the meeting outlined plans to elect a dedicated slate of SHSU PDK officers. These individuals will play a pivotal role in orchestrating tailored activities and initiatives specifically catered to the SHSU chapter. By empowering local leaders within SHSU, the broader objective of fostering professional growth and camaraderie within the educational community takes a significant stride forward.
Leveraging the collective expertise and passion for education shared among the participants, the meeting concluded on a promising note. Dr. Strunc expressed her gratitude for the collaborative spirit and the commitment shown by the Houston Area Chapter towards revitalizing the SHSU PDK chapter. She highlighted the potential for impactful collaborations and the enriching opportunities that lie ahead.
So, stay tuned—exciting things are brewing!
