We believe in transparency, so we have created this detailed guide to help you choose the room that best fits your needs, budget, and comfort requirements. Please read the descriptions below carefully, as our rooms differ significantly in terms of space, temperature control, and noise levels. Please note that each category has two options: a female-only room and a mixed-gender room. Room Selection Guide
To ensure a comfortable stay, please select the appropriate room type for your gender:
For Women: Please choose from our dedicated Female Only rooms.
For Men: Please select our Mixed rooms, which are the primary choice and typically occupied only by men.
The following detailed descriptions of our Basic, Standard, and Deluxe tiers apply identically to both Female-Only and Mixed rooms.
The Basic Room (EU Eco-Austerity) is our most affordable option, designed specifically for minimalist travelers, backpackers, and those on a very tight budget who primarily need a place to sleep at the lowest possible price.
📦 Space and Layout
This is our smallest and most compact room. If you are looking for extra space to move around, this might not be the right choice for you. It is functional but tight. The room features standard-height bunk beds (IKEA style). Please be mindful when moving around or sitting up in bed, as the clearance between levels is standard, and you should watch your head to avoid bumps.
🌡️ Climate and Temperature (Important!)
Please note that the Basic Room DOES NOT have Air Conditioning or a Heating system (EU Eco-Austerity):
In Summer: The room can get quite HOT. We provide an electric fan to help circulate the air, but the room temperature will stay high during heatwaves.
In Winter: The room can get COLD. While we provide a heated mattress for every bed to keep you warm under the covers, the air in the room will remain chilly.
If you are sensitive to temperature, we strongly recommend upgrading to a Standard or Deluxe room.
🔊 Noise and Privacy
There is NO soundproofing in the Basic Room. Because it is a budget option, you may hear noise from the corridors, reception, common areas, or street. Each bed is open (no curtains), making it a more social but less private environment.
🔐 Amenities and Storage
Each guest in the Basic Room gets access to a personal locker for securing luggage and valuables. For your electronics, each bed is equipped with a personal light bulb and a double power socket, so you can charge your phone and laptop simultaneously.
The Standard Room is a medium-sized accommodation that offers a significant upgrade in comfort, climate control, and privacy compared to the Basic option. It is the ideal choice for guests who want a reliable, temperature-controlled environment.
📏 Space and Comfort
The Standard Room is medium-sized, providing more breathing room than the Basic category. One of the best features is our custom-built metal Extra-Headroom Bunk Beds. These frames are engineered to be much higher than standard beds, offering both sturdiness and space. You can sit up straight, read, or work on your laptop in bed without any fear of hitting your head on the top bunk.
❄️ Year-Round Climate Control
Unlike the Basic rooms, every Standard Room is equipped with a full Air Conditioning and Heating system. This ensures a stable, comfortable, and pleasant temperature throughout the entire year, regardless of whether it is freezing outside or a scorching summer day.
🙈 Privacy and 🔊 Noise
For your peace of mind, every bed in the Standard Room is fitted with a Privacy Curtain. This allows you to create your own personal space within the room. This room also does not have soundproofing, and it is possible that extraneous sounds will be heard in the room: from the reception, the corridor, and the street.
👗 Storage and Electronics
Storage is much more convenient here. In addition to a personal locker, the room includes a full-sized wardrobe with hangers for your clothes. For your devices, each bed comes with a double power socket. This room is designed for guests who stay for several days and want to keep their things organized.
The Deluxe Room is our best offer. It's a spacious, quiet, and fully equipped room in the building. It's designed for those who value peace, extra space, and the ability to work or relax in a private setting.
🏰 Maximum Space and Extra-Headroom Bunk Bed
The Deluxe Room is our most spacious accommodation. It offers plenty of floor space and features our signature metal Extra-Headroom Bunk Beds. The vertical space is maximized, providing a feeling of openness and freedom. Even the tallest guests can enjoy their stay without feeling cramped or restricted.
🤫 Soundproofing
This is the only room category that features Sound Insulation. We have designed this room to block out as much external noise as possible, making it the perfect choice for light sleepers or those who need a quiet environment to rest after a long day of traveling.
☀️ Perfect Climate and Working Area
Like the Standard rooms, the Deluxe comes with high-quality Air Conditioning and Heating. You have full control over your comfort. Furthermore, the Deluxe room is the only one that includes a dedicated workspace. You will find a proper desk and chair, making it ideal for digital nomads or anyone who needs to catch up on emails.
🪑 Furniture and Storage
The Deluxe Room is fully furnished to feel more like a home. It includes:
A Full Wardrobe for all your clothing.
A Personal Locker for security items.
A Bedside Console to keep your personal items within reach.
A Desk and Chair for work or study.
💡 Bed Amenities and Privacy
Privacy is a priority here. Each bed has a Privacy Curtain, a personal light bulb for nighttime reading, a double power socket for all your gadgets, and a small built-in shelf for your phone or glasses.
Welcome to Hostel N1 in Sofia, the multi-award-winning destination for travelers who value peace, quiet, and a high standard of living. Officially recognized as the Winner of Hoscars (Best Hostel in Bulgaria) for 2024, 2025, and 2026, our property has set a new benchmark for excellence in the heart of the capital.
Our hostel is located in a monumental building constructed in 1919. While the facade today tells a century-old story and awaits its future restoration, the true value lies within its "bones." Built in an era of uncompromising quality, the building features extraordinary thick walls — both exterior and interior.
For our guests, this historical architecture serves a very modern purpose: unmatched sound isolation and thermal comfort. In a world of thin partitions, our thick walls are the physical foundation of our "Quiet Policy," ensuring that the silence we promise is the silence you get.
Formerly known to many regular guests as Good Hostel, we have evolved into a unique concept brand: Hostel N1 "No Party & Many Rules". Our philosophy is simple — we believe that strict standards lead to superior experiences. This is why we are widely known among the travel community as Hostel N1 by rules, a place where respect for fellow guests is our top priority.
Whether you are looking for us as Hostel No 1 or N1 Hostel Sofia, you will find a tailored experience across our three signature comfort tiers: Basic (The Budget Choice), Standard (the Comfort Choice) and Deluxe (the Comfort & Quiet Choice).
To ensure the best experience, please select the tier that matches your expectations. All guests, regardless of room type, must follow our strict silence and house rules. The category descriptions for Basic, Standard, and Deluxe tiers apply equally to both our Mixed and Female Only rooms:
This is our most economical option for minimalist travelers and those who prefer EU Eco-Austerity.

Climate: No A/C or heater. We provide a fan in summer and a heated mattress pad in winter.
Sound: No soundproofing.
Note: Choose this only if you prioritize price over space and amenities and are prepared for basic conditions without complaints.
A mid-sized room providing the essential comforts for a pleasant stay.
Space: Average room size, equipped with a locker and a wardrobe for your belongings.
Climate: Fully equipped with Air Conditioning and a heater.
Sound: No soundproofing.
Our best rooms, designed for those who need extra space and a quiet environment.
Space: Spacious room with a locker, wardrobe, desk, and chair. Includes a specialized bedside laptop stand for comfortable work.

Our Female Only rooms follow the same specifications and comfort tiers (Basic, Standard, and Deluxe) as described above.
Choose the perfect fit for your journey in our dedicated Women's Rooms. We offer three signature comfort tiers. Brief recap:
Basic Female Room: The cheapest, minimalist choice for the budget-conscious (compact space, essential amenities, no soundproofing).
Standard Female Room: The comfort choice (mid-sized, includes Air Conditioning and wardrobe, no soundproofing).
Deluxe Female Room: The comfort & quiet choice (spacious, workspace included, enhanced soundproofing).

There is a simple truth most travelers discover sooner or later:
Your stay is defined less by the bed — and more by the people around you.
That’s why some guests don’t just look for the cheapest option.
They look for the right environment.
At Hostel N1 — also known as Hostel N1 Sofia, Hostel №1 in Sofia, Hostel N1 – Stay & Play by the Rules, Hostel №1 by Rules, No Party & Many Rules Hostel, and sometimes even “Too Many Rules Hostel” — something very specific happens:
It consistently attracts calm, respectful, and socially aware people.
People who:
think before they act
respect personal and shared space
value sleep, order, and clarity
understand that freedom comes with responsibility
And this is not luck.
There is a clear reason behind it.
Price is not just a number. It’s a signal.
In behavioral economics, there is a well-known concept called the zero price effect:
when something is extremely cheap (or feels almost free), people tend to behave differently.
They value it less.
They act more impulsively.
They think less about consequences.
This effect has been observed across many industries — including hospitality.
Lower prices are consistently associated with:
more noise and disregard for quiet hours
less respect for shared spaces
more rule violations
higher likelihood of conflicts
Not because “cheap guests are bad.”
But because low cost reduces the psychological sense of responsibility.
Hostel operators across different countries report the same pattern:
Take the exact same hostel.
Same rooms, same beds, same location.
Adjust two things:
slightly increase the price
clearly define and enforce rules
The result?
noise decreases
cleanliness improves
guests become more considerate
conflicts drop dramatically — or disappear entirely
Nothing physical changed.
But the type of guest did.
Price alone is not enough.
Rules alone are not enough.
But together, they create a powerful filter.
Price influences who arrives.
Rules influence how they behave.
When both are aligned, something rare happens:
You don’t manage problems — you prevent them.
Some guests leave reviews saying:
“Too many rules.”
We pay attention to that.
Because this phrase usually reveals a mismatch — not a problem.
It often comes from people who expect:
fewer boundaries
more flexibility around noise or behavior
a cheaper, less structured environment
And that’s completely fine.
There are many places designed exactly for that.
At Hostel N1 in Sofia, the combination of thoughtful pricing and clear rules creates a very specific outcome.
Not luxury.
Not strict control.
But a stable, respectful environment.
In practice, this means:
people sleep at night without interruption
shared spaces remain clean and usable
communication is calm and respectful
conflicts are essentially non-existent
Not because they are constantly “managed.”
But because the environment filters out the conditions that create them.
Over time, a clear pattern emerges.
This place — whether you call it Hostel N1 Sofia, Good Hostel, or even Hostel N1 “Too Many Rules” — attracts people who:
value predictability over chaos
prefer respect over noise
understand shared responsibility
choose environment over price alone
In simple terms:
people who make life easier for others — and expect the same in return.
And when enough of these people are in one place, something happens that many travelers rarely experience:
It becomes easy to meet genuinely good, interesting, and respectful individuals.
Not by coincidence.
But by design.
If someone is looking for:
the absolute lowest price
no structure
no expectations
“freedom” without responsibility
They will likely say:
“Too many rules.”
And they will be right.
But they will also not be the right guests for this environment.
Low prices don’t just make things accessible.
They shape behavior.
Rules don’t just restrict.
They define culture.
And when price and rules work together, they create something far more valuable than a cheap stay:
they create a place where people naturally respect each other.
That’s why some people complain.
And others quietly think:
“This is exactly what I was looking for.”
When travelers search for a hostel in Sofia, they often assume one thing:
Safety is standard.
In reality, it isn’t.
Hostels differ dramatically in safety — not only because of physical features, but because of something far more important:
the type of people they attract and the systems they enforce.
Understanding this difference is the key to choosing the right place.
Across Sofia — and in most major cities — hostels tend to fall into three broad safety categories:
These places focus primarily on being the cheapest option available.
Typical characteristics:
minimal rule enforcement
high guest turnover
mixed and unpredictable social environment
little accountability for behavior
Even with cameras or lockers, these hostels often feel less safe.
Why?
Because safety is not created by objects — it is created by people and behavior.
These offer a balance between affordability and structure.
Typical characteristics:
basic rules (often loosely enforced)
average cleanliness
moderate staff presence
generally acceptable, but inconsistent environment
These places can feel safe — or not — depending entirely on who happens to be staying at the time.
This is the rare category.
These hostels are intentionally designed to create predictable, stable, and respectful environments.
They combine:
clearly defined and enforced rules
pricing that filters for responsible guests
consistent staff presence
strong operational discipline
The result is not just security — but a socially safe environment.
Most people think safety comes from:
cameras
locks
location
These matter — but research in behavioral science and criminology shows something deeper:
When guests:
respect boundaries
follow rules
think about others
incidents such as theft, conflict, and disturbance drop dramatically.
This is known as environmental filtering:
the idea that the structure of a place determines who enters — and therefore how people behave inside it.
Hostel N1 belongs to the third category:
a structured, high-safety environment by design.
It achieves this through a combination of social filtering and physical security systems.
Hostel N1 consistently attracts guests who are:
calm and respectful
thoughtful in their behavior
aware of shared space
focused on rest, order, and clarity
This is not accidental.
It is the result of:
clear expectations
consistent rule enforcement
a culture that values responsibility
In practice, this means:
minimal noise at night
respectful communication
almost no conflicts
a natural sense of trust between guests
Guests often describe this not as “strict” — but as comfortable and mentally safe.
At Hostel N1, rules are not reactive.
They are preventive.
They are designed to eliminate the conditions that typically lead to:
конфликт
нарушение границ
ночной шум
хаос в общих зонах
Because of this, problems rarely need to be “managed” — they simply don’t arise.
Beyond the social environment, Hostel N1 includes all key physical safety measures expected from a high-standard hostel:
Controlled access system (chip entry door) — only guests can enter
Security cameras at the entrance and in common areas
Lockers for personal belongings
24/7 on-site staff presence (within operational hours and structure)
Central location on a safe, well-trafficked street in Sofia
Female-only rooms for additional comfort and security
These systems provide structure — but they work effectively because of the environment around them.
Cleanliness is often underestimated as part of safety.
At Hostel N1:
bathrooms are cleaned three times per day
common areas are maintained continuously
hygiene standards are strictly monitored
Why does this matter?
Because clean environments:
reduce stress
increase respect for shared space
reinforce responsible behavior
This is another form of indirect safety — and it plays a significant role.
Two hostels can have:
the same locks
the same cameras
the same location
And still feel completely different.
Why?
Because one controls who stays there — and the other does not.
Hostel safety is not a checklist.
It is a system.
The safest hostels combine:
the right people
the right rules
the right structure
and the right physical measures
Hostel N1 in Sofia brings all of these together.
Not by chance.
But by design.
That is why guests who value:
calm
respect
predictability
and real safety
consistently choose it.
And why many of them say, after arriving:
“This feels different.”
