Rawls, for example, advocates toleration, reasonableness, mutualrespect, a sense of fairness, and a spiritofcompromise.[153] This is anextraordinarily limited list, admitting little more than the character traitsthat are causally conducive to maintainingRawlsian political liberalism itself.Indeed, not only does Rawls himself admit this fact, but also his own briefdiscussion of ethicsimplies that these virtues are to be inculcated by thestate through socialengineering.[154] The liberalinstitutional preoccupation persists, it seems, all the waydown.[155] Moreover, theoverwhelming passivity of virtues such as tolerance and compromise seemswholly insufficient, at least when set against the highly combative nature ofpopulism.[156]
