Shared Equipment
Below are instruments purchased with shared instrument grants (through RDI TRIF or NSF MRI) and maintained by the Horton lab. Please email Dr. Nancy Horton (nhorton@arizona.edu) if you would like to set up a time to learn more and/or use any of these items.
Optima Multi-wavelength Analytical Ultracentrifuge
Measures native molecular weight and in some cases Kd of binding/oligomerization
Provides information on native molecular weights of species in solutions
Can read wavelengths from 250 nm - 800 nm and refractive index
Requires 400-600 ul of material at concentrations sutiable for detection by absorbance (0.1-1 mg/ml for proteins, less for nucleic acids and molecules with fluorophores)
Temperature from 4C - 37C
Measurements take 17-24 hours
Not for purification (analysis only)
Refeyn Mass Photometer
Measure native MW of a single or multiple species in solution
Requires only 1 drop
Measurement takes minutes
Wyatt Dynamic Light Scattering Instrument
Determine Stoke's radius of species in solutionÂ
Can relate measurement to native molecular weight
Can determine native MW of different species in solution
Requires about 10 ul of sample at concentrations ~1 mg/ml
Measurement takes minutes
Avestin Scientific Emulsiflex
Lyses cells quickly and easily
Minimum volume 10 ml
No maximum volume
Lyse by passing cells through instrument 3-4 times. Each 250 ml of cell culture takes about 15 minutes
