The 2022 HSA Mid-Winter Meeting convened (in-person!) at French Mortuary, with Norma Leeper at the helm. Following presentations and updates by Fire and Safety Coordinator, Robert Lazar, recognition by Sandy Eckert of the latest achievements in the Caldera Century Challenge, and reminders of upcoming CCR inspections from Sandy Engel, we were delighted by the stories and slides from guest dendrochronologist Tom Swetnam, who shared a historical perspective of the health of our Jemez forest. The XJM (Explorers of the Jemez Mountain) is ready to roll Sat, Aug 7, for an explore (TBD, but most likely toward Amoxiumqua Historic Site). ATV's and 4-wheel-drive vehicles meet at 8:30 Saturday morning at the Horseshoe Springs gate at the intersection of Horseshoe Spring Rd and Horseshoe Loop, and we will trailer/shuttle ATV's to the trailhead. In addition to your adventurous spirit, bring water, layers, and a lunch! The joy is in the journey!
The Shed Has Been Moved!
A big thank you to Tom Broadbent, Michael VanHecke, and Elise Rogers for helping! Glen brilliantly applied all those physics concepts, and some creativity to make it happen. Here is a video capturing the multiple day project. It’s long, about 13 minutes but for those who want to see how it went down, enjoy the YouTube link!
We still need to do a few details like paint the shed, complete steps, move a sign, a little landscaping, etc but it looks great in its new location!
On a beautiful September day, a cohort of 12 went on a 30 mile ride on 30 wheels. Our destination was the Gilman Tunnel overlook, but, as always, the joy is also in the journey.
In-person AND by ZOOM!
Doing it OUR Way..the HSA Way!
Our HSA community came together to work and maintain the safety, integrity, and beauty of our shared spaces. And, of course, we practiced social distancing and mask-wearing so that we could also gather to eat and celebrate each other.
Part of what makes our cabin community so appealing is that we take care of it. It is our responsibility that we each do what we can to maintain the common areas. This is our annual day to work together, foster community, and enjoy the ambience and fellowship we treasure here. This year we are all aware that everyone is consciously Social Distancing, many of the work assignments can be accomplished by working in small groups wearing masks while maintaining a respectable social distance between workers. Some tasks such as chipping slash wearing a mask has always been a very good idea.

~ GRAB n’ GO ~ Gather for Coffee & Refreshments ~ Sign in/Work Assignments/Meet up with your coworkers
Afternoon “Bring Your Own” Picnic
~ set up time, 4:00pm ~ Dinner 4:30pm ~ Location, Louise & Tom Broadbent cabin 367 Horseshoe Loop
(attendance is entirely an individual choice, please contact Louise for details of how this part of the day will be set up)
There are still empty spaces on the sign up sheet that need to be filled as well as some extra helpers needed to work with Brent Bonwell on the chipper, Norma could use a person or two to help thinning pine saplings, Charlie & Michelle Tatlock could use some extra hands on clearing out the overflow ditch. The tasks that still need work teams are raking around the North and South Water tanks and the spring shed, and we could sure use another person to travel between work groups delivering water ...
Thank you all very much

Working together for the common good is the greatest creed ~ Albert Schweitzer
....the following announcement was posted by Brent Bonwell, I believe it cannot hurt to repeat it again
"I've confirmed with Howard Fegan that he will be bringing the County chipper to the HSA annual workday on Saturday, May 23rd. He'll be there at 9am. We'll do Horseshoe Loop counter clockwise, then go to the south loop and finish with the slash at the campground. It's easier to pick up and load if the slash is left in larger pieces, with all the butt ends facing the road, and not stacked too high, where the slash gets tangled with each other.
Now's a good time to think about doing some additional thinning near your cabin and getting the slash to the roadside by the workday. If you have slash, it will be helpful if you can help load it into the chipper."
See you at the workday!
Our HSA Community gathers occasionally at times and places other than our sweet cabins- here are some snapshots of some of you who attended the Mid-Winter Meeting. New friends and old, good food from Monroe's restaurant and all the members. Especially the delicious desserts! Our speaker, Charlie McDonald shared his expertise on wildflowers of the Jemez. We will all be searching for these flowers this spring and summer. Thanks to Robert Lazar and his team for all the time and effort to make the inspections of our cabins efficient and timely. NEXT meeting opportunity will be April 25 at Jemez Mountain Baptist Church for the annual Fire Wise Workshop. It is a great time to meet the experts in the community that share their wisdom on fire prevention.
Saturday, September 28; Time: TBD; Ride to the Cerro Pelado Lookout - Contact Rick McInturff or Michael VanHecke
